Moves that had happened by this time last offseason:

- Kendrys Morales had signed a 3 year deal with the Blue Jays
- Charlie Morton had signed a 2 year deal with the Astros
- Bartolo Colon and RA Dickey had signed 1 year deals with the Braves
- Four trades at least as big as the Ryon Healy deal had happened: McCann to Astros, Maybin to Angels, Valencia to Mariners, and Neshek to Phillies.

And there were more moves coming--by the end of Thanksgiving weekend, Reddick and Cecil had signed 4 year deals, Cashner had signed a 1 year deal, and Segura/Haniger had been traded to the Mariners for Walker/Marte.  This has been a really slow start to the offseason this year.

Stanton rumors:

http://mlb.nbcsports.com/2017/11/20/giants-cardinals-reportedly-have-offers-on-the-table-for-giancarlo-stanton/

The Giants offer cited in that article is Stanton and Gordon to the Giants for Joe Panik, SP Tyler Beede & OF Chris Shaw.  The same writer tweeted that the Cardinals offer includes Sandy Alcantara.

I doubt Alcantara gets it done.

I find it amusing that the Cardinals are trying to work a trade for Stanton and take on his 295M contract.  This is the same team that wouldn't give Pujols the money to stay.  Hope nobody points out to them that teams with that much invested in one player seldom win enough.

Phillies DFA Mark Appel.  That was a major misstep in the Astros rebuild.  Even if they really wanted a pitcher, Jon Gray turned out to be the far better pick.

Seems like Appel just immediately lost his stuff the moment he was drafted.  They still got Ken Giles out of that anyway, and he was useful up until the postseason for them.

Stanton is 27; Pujols was 32 when he joined Anaheim.  Cardinals have a good record of evaluation, I think; they were certainly right on Albert.  His last year with them was his first under 1.000 and his last over .900; his first wit Anaheim was his only .800+ for them.  He was definitely already in decline.

In retrospect, to Cardinals fans have any consensus on his age?  I thought there were sometimes questions about whether his age was correct, or whether he was perhaps a little older than list?  Man he was a great hitter for them, but those days were done when they wisely let him walk.

His delivery apparently lacks deception as his stuff plays down.

Not sure the Cardinals were "right" on Pujols as all reports were they offered substantially more than the Angels.  I believe they even offered more on Heyward.

I guess my deal is from Cardinal country.  These people can twist anything to make it sound like their front office is superior.  And to keep the fans happy they had all kinds of arguments why they couldn't pay Albert.  None of craig's argument is wrong, it wasn't what I was trying to say.  You gotta live down here.

Yeah, I can only imagine what it's like living in Cardinals country.

Still, at the pure baseball level, the Cardinals are a dangerous rival.  I respectfully fear how much more difficult they might be if they can add a 28-year-old Stanton in his prime.

He'll get paid less than Heyward this season, and for the next five years he'll be upper $20s, qualitatively like Heyward or maybe like Heyward + Koji.  Probably a great contract during the Cubs playoff window.  Great player, and if they can get him for surplus prospects, they'll be a much more challenging rival during the Cubs window.

They'll be more dangerous if they get Stanton, BUT if they have to give up Alex Reyes to get him, it will hurt them, plus the concept of having too much money in one player.

Heard stuff today that if Arrieta doesn't sign with the Cubs, Yu Darvish will be the big target.  Paperboy's been wrong before though.
