That seems pretty club-reasonable.  He's got a shot to be very good.

I'd tend to agree, but I'm glad he isn't a Cub either.  $9ish million a year is basically paying him to be a 1ish WAR pitcher and out of the bullpen where his stuff plays up and  he has maybe less stress on his arm he could easily make that worth while.  His average fastball velocity went from 91.7 as starter to 94.9 in the bullpen.  As a starter that contract scares me.  He hasn't proven that he can stay healthy.  In relief he had a 29.7% K rate, as a starter it was in the low 20's.  He also had a lot better contact profile as a reliever.  In relief he was basically fastball/slider and he threw his slider almost 36% of the time.  As a starter he was 60% fastball and slider/changeup/curve.  Can his arm hold up doing what he did last year?  There is a lot of risk with Minor and some upside as well.

Good points.  Still, the guy was a really effective pitcher this past year, in relief.  Getting a really good reliever for $9/year is good value.  If he translates some of what made him so good in relief into rotation, he could be a pretty good starter.  The price for a good, safe starter is way higher.  Cubs figured Lackey good value at $16/year; if you want somebody who's both durable/safe AND good, $9/year doesn't do that.  So seems like the risk/reward in Minor's case is pretty reasonably balanced, and pretty club-reasonable.

We'll see what the Cubs come up with.

Rafael Palmeiro, 53, says he is considering MLB comeback
Quote
More than a dozen years after he last appeared in a major-league game, Rafael Palmeiro says he is eyeing a return to professional baseball.

In a story published Wednesday, the now 53-year-old Palmeiro tells The Athletic that there's "no doubt" in his mind he can mount a comeback and be an effective player at the major-league level. The oldest position player to play regularly at the major-league level was Julio Franco, who retired in 2007 at 49.

"I want to prove to myself I can do it on a high level," Palmeiro told The Athletic.

Palmeiro added that he believes he could earn a job in spring training and would not have to climb through the minor leagues.

He could probably win another Gold Glove if they hadn't changed the minimum number of games you have to play in the field.

Craig, are you in the blizzard zone?

Not too bad.  It was fun on Monday, and HS-daughter got to go home from school an hour early.  College daughter thought visibility on interstate would be too low for safety, so drove slow through city streets and stuff.  But we only got a couple of inches of snow, so no matter how much it blows it can't drift up much.  I know it's selfish because blizzards can be terrible for travellers and people in the country.  But for myself, I think they're really fun and exciting!

Exactly.  I loved blizzards as long as I could look at them from my living room window.

Them there blizzards drive us louisiana folks up a wall. We had almost an inch of snow a couple years back. The whole state was on lockdown and all the roads closed.

Smart, resets the HOF clock and maybe gets him back on the ballot when the glut clears and voters are more sensible about the steroid thing.

Not sure that would actually change anything but it’s his only shot.

The Mariners like to trade.  They just acquired Dee Gordon according to Rosenthal.

With Cano at second base, the plan is apparently to shift Gordon to the outfield.
