Rene Rivera's contract with the Angels is 1 year, $2.8 million with incentives that could take it to $3 million.

The Astros may be getting closer to trading for Cole. That would be nice--get a good starter out of the division, and take one of the potential destinations for Darvish off the table.

Rosenthal confirms Cole momentum for the Astros:

Ken Rosenthal @Ken_Rosenthal
Sources confirm momentum in Cole discussions between #Astros and #Pirates, as @JesseSanchezMLB reported. Wrote today about how Astros would prefer to trade for Cole than sign Darvish - and concerns some clubs have with the Pirates’ right-hander.

Cole to the Astros is indeed fine for the Cubs, especially in that it takes a Darvish rival out of the game.  Unless the Yankees or Dodgers jump in, kind of hard to see anybody but the Twinkies as a serious rival at this point.

Now Passan says there is no Cole deal. This offseason is awful.

I think some clubs are pretty reserved in their comments, so I'm not sure the absence of public rumor necessarily proves that a team isn't interested or isn't quietly negotiating with an agent.  The media always speculates on the big market teams, so there's a decent chance that public rumor will tend to mention a team like the Cubs more than some others.

Is there any chance the Cardinals might not have an interest?  They may view themselves as having a very good team that has a shot.  They still had a real shot to catch the Cubs into mid-September.  They added Ozuna, who just posted a .924 season and having just turned 27 may have just hit his prime.  Might they not think that by adding Ozuna and Darvish, while the Cubs were losing Davis and Arrieta, that they might not have at least a reasonable shot to pass the Cubs up?  Given that Ozuna is not expensive, and they had cash to take on Stanton's contract, shouldn't they have some $$ left to spend?

Of course I'm not saying they're after Darvish, just that it's probably not as simple as Cubs or Twins and there's really nowhere else for Darvish to go.  Who knows who will eventually pop up and sign him?

The St. Louis media tends to think they have a shot.  Don't know if that's hype for the home team or reality or fantasy.   The local media still have them in the hunt for Darvish, McCutcheon, J.D., Arrieta.  Of course, they still think they have a shot at Stanton, too, so...

That's a really good signing for the Mets in this market.
