No matter how good Jimenez ends up, I can't imagine ever regretting that trade from the Cubs perspective. Getting 3 1/2 years (4 pennant races) of a near-ace starting pitcher with Quintana's contract is just so valuable.

Remains to be seen if that’s what we get.

Bumgarner was hit by a batted ball today and has a fractured left hand:

Huge blow for the Giants. And Samardzija has a shoulder issue that will keep him out for a month too.

The Giants had no margin for error to begin with. Now that they're missing two of their top three starters, they're really in trouble.

If the Cubs need an outfielder in July, it seems like McCutchen will probably be available.

Olney just tweeted that Bumgarner will be out 6-8 weeks.

Too bad McCutchen can’t play CF any more.

More good news from Cubs farmhand alumni . . .

Quote
Daniel Vogelbach - 1B - Mariners

Dan Vogelbach stayed hot in Friday’s game against the White Sox by slugging a solo homer and drawing a walk.

Vogelbach is now up to six homers on the spring to go along with an impressive .388/.508/.878 batting line. He might make the Opening Day roster with the strong showing, but there’s not going to be much room for at-bats with Ryon Healy expected to begin the year as the starting first baseman.

Will flip-flopping fielders be baseball's latest trend?

Quote
CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) — New Philadelphia Phillies manager Gabe Kapler's progressive approach includes a strategy straight from a slow-pitch softball league.

Kapler plans to flip-flop outfielders in the middle of an inning to put his best defensive player in the position where the spray charts indicate a batter is most likely to hit the ball.

If Kyle Schwarber has to move to right field and Jason Heyward takes his place in left every time Paul Goldschmidt comes to the plate, wouldn't this present another pace-of-play problem?

If we've reached this point in things, I might have to go into the Goose Goosage "Stats Nerds are Ruining the Game" crowd.

Then all we have to do is add "Stats" to your off board nickname.

Marlins will DL Dan Straily to start the season. Realmuto and J.T. Riddle might start the year on the DL as well.
