These announcements are not what is going to prevent any baseball from being played in 2020.  It will be what is going on all around the country.
Well, yeah...

Angels had own issue with testing today. Per sources, testers did not show. Players did saliva tests on their own; unclear if/how tests were shipped to lab in Utah. But Monday workout was pushed back from 9 am PT to noon, seemingly to give lab more time to determine results.

Besides the Angels

Bob Nightengale  @BNightengale  31m
The Washington #Nats cancel their workout today while awaiting test results from Friday and the Oakland #A's still have not had a full-squad workout with their test results yet to be sent to a lab

Nats GM Mike Rizzo

The over/under on whether or not this announcement will be made?

The first two episodes of The Sounds of Baseball were well worth watching.  I'm looking forward to Bob Uecker being on.

The Padres and Cardinals are also encountering testing difficulties.

An oft-asked question: Why can't MLB just follow the KBO model? The answer: the context is completely different for the KBO. South Korea, (pop. 52 million) has not had a day of 100 people testing + for COVID-19 since March 31. U.S.: 200,000+ tested positive in the last four days.

Apparently decided to opt out after talking to Freddie Freeman.

A lot of health places have reduced workforce during 4th of July weekend.  Perhaps not surprising that submitting tests on July 3 might not have gotten the best turnover time.

In terms of player safety, a number of athletes have tested positive.

I wonder how much safer a lot of them are to stay home than to go in and practice or play?  Maybe Markakis is way safer at home.  But I'm guessing a lot of guys probably aren't totally isolating and masking at home.  In the NBA bubble, having maskless defenders right on top of you breathing heavily; and having the bubble in hot-spot Florida, that's lose-lose risk-escalation.  But on the other hand, being bubbled off, having protocols, and having something professionally productive to do with their time, while having daily testing and constantly available medical care, I wonder how much higher their risk will be in bubble than hanging out with time on their hands if the league shuts down for the season?

For a lot of the Cubs, I wonder if their proximity and exposure is really significantly any worse than if they cancel the season don't have baseball to occupy their time, and are instead trying to kill 24 hours per day?  Not sure the incidence rate for big-league players will be any higher with baseball on than if those guys were just out in the general public like everybody else.

I expect this may draw a comment or two

Bob Nightengale  @BNightengale  1h
The Nashville group is hoping to become the first #MLB team with African-American majority ownership. Former 20-game winner and GM Dave Stewart and Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa are part of the group, with Dave Dombrowski.

Bob Nightengale  @BNightengale  1h
Dave Dombrowski, former GM of the #RedSox, is moving to Nashville and joining Music City Baseball, LLC, in an attempt to bring #MLB to Nashville. The city is hoping to land an expansion franchise or have an existing team relocate to Nashville.

Jon Heyman  @JonHeyman  10m
In the current environment, MLB has no immediate plans to expand to Nashville or anywhere else, per a Major League source.

Honestly I still don't know a lot about who's leading the ownership effort for a Nashville MLB team, and quite frankly I've still barely taken it seriously.  That's actually the first I've heard about it having African-American majority ownership.

Nashville still just doesn't seem like a true baseball town to me, but you never know.  Plus, it seems like their only hopes of really getting a team would be convincing Oakland or Tampa Bay to move, and that doesn't seem likely at this point either.

I will say that's about the first time I've seen a national baseball writer do any reporting on it, though.  Up until this point, it's only been the occasional blurb in the Tennessean.
