Joe West is an A-hole in every possible way, so why should this be any different?

MLB umpires Joe West, Gerry Davis take opposing stances on COVID-shortened 2020 season

Quote
“Those statistics aren’t accurate, I don’t care who’s counting them,’’ West said from his Florida home. “When country music [singer] Joe Diffie died, they said he died of the coronavirus. He had Stage 4 lung cancer. The coronavirus may have accelerated his death, but let’s be realistic.

“Our system is so messed up they have emptied hospitals because there’s no elective surgery. The government has been given these hospitals extra money if someone dies of the coronavirus. So everybody that dies is because of coronavirus. I don’t care if you get hit by a car, it’s coronavirus.’’

Hospitals are empty?

Joe West is a conspiracy nut? Another unsurprising thing about him.

Seems like Nightengale could have followed up that nonsense by noting that hospitals are quickly reaching capacity in a some places, and Joe Diffie did not have lung cancer.

Florida will not release hospital numbers... But from what I've heard from a couple friends in ft Lauderdale and Miami, they are seeing a huge surge of hospitalizations. Not the least bit surprising.

What we're seeing is a virtual copy of the way this played out in places like NY, WA and CA two months ago - except this time with state governments that aren't willing to try and improve the situation.  It's a huge powederkeg.

That's so 2020 that the umpiring union was put into a position where they felt the need to put out a statement like that.  Good lord.

Gotta love Dusty, he hasn't changed one bit in 27 years.

Quote
Astros manager Dusty Baker indicated Wednesday that the right field job likely belongs to Josh Reddick.

It's not what fantasy players want to hear, because that means Kyle Tucker will have to continue to wait his turn. “The future is probably Tucker’s, but the now is probably Reddick’s,” Baker said. We would bet on Tucker wrestling the right field gig away from Reddick if he had a full season to do it, but it's far less of a certainty during a 60-game season.

Buster Posey is opting out of the season.

Andrew Baggarly @extrabaggs
Buster Posey and his wife are adopting identical twin girls. That is why he has missed time in camp. The twins were born prematurely and stable but will be in NICU for some time. He is opting out of the season.

Just something I was thinking about watching a few Giants World Series games on MLB Network, has Buster Posey already done enough to lock up a spot in Cooperstown?  MVP and three World Series titles, it seems like he'd be in if he felt like retiring right now, right?

Congratulations to Posey and his wife, and I admire his and her choice both to adopt, and to put two precious little new lives ahead of baseball and career.

Cancellation of the 2020 season might not be imminent but it is getting closer.

In their workouts, they keep arguing about whether a fastball is one bang or two.
