It looks like May should get a hold, though; he pitched 5 1/3 innings with the lead and his team still had the lead when he came out.

If he had been able to stay in the game and finish it, he would have gotten a 7-inning save.

This kind of thing happened with Bumgarner pitching for the Giants in the postseason a few years ago.  The starter comes out early, a reliever comes in and his team takes the lead, then as the third pitcher he works multiple innings and can get a "save". Years ago, I had never imagined this kind of situation and wrongly believed that the longest possible save situation was 4 innings (with the starter pitching the first 5).  But it's actually possible to have an 8-inning save.

Is there not a scorer’s discretion clause to the rule? That’s kinda where I was going with it...

Looks like LeMahieu's season last year was no fluke. He's raking. I don't think that Ian Stewart trade has panned out.

9.17 pretty clearly states that the scorer can assign the W to the most effective relief pitcher.

I'm not sure anyone can make the argument that Kolarek was more effective than May.

The list of the top relievers in baseball by strikeout rate since August 7 sure is fun.

Think you’re referring to 9.17(b). But, that section doesn’t apply here.

9.17 (b) would apply if SP completes bottom of the 2nd and his team takes the lead in top of the 3rd and never relinquishes lead. Then, most effective reliever gets the win because SP didn’t go 5.

Here, reliever Kolarek (and not the SP) completed the 2nd and his team took the lead in top of the third. That makes Kolarek the pitcher of record under Rule 9.17 (a). Doesn’t matter which reliever is most effective.

There is a proviso exception to 9.17 (a) that refers to Rule 9.17 (c): a reliever who is “ineffective” in a brief appearance (even if he is pitcher of record under 9.17(a). Comment to 9.17 c) says generally applies if reliever allows 2 or more runs to score—can be deemed “ineffective” if official scorer so chooses.

But proviso doesn’t apply here as only 1 run scored in the Kolarek inning. Therefore, Kolarek has to get the win under 9.17 (a).

Never seen this before.

In today’s Twins/White Sox game, Josh Donaldson managed to get ejected on his home run trot as he crossed home plate!

Actually, rather than stepping on the plate, Donaldson dragged dirt all over the plate with his foot—apparently to notify the plate umpire that he still didn’t appreciate a very bad out-of-the-zone strike call earlier against Donaldson.

That's the part I was missing...thanks...

Rule 9.17(d) The official scored may credit a relief pitcher the win if it screws Dave Fleming out of fantasy points.

Rule 9.17 is fine regarding Kolarek getting the win, but why doesn't May get a hold?  He came in with the lead, it was technically a save situation, and his team still had the lead when he came out. And the reliever who followed him (who pitched many fewer innings) got a hold.

The Yankees are threatening to hit 6 homers for the third straight game. Don't know if that's ever happened.
