The White Sox future currently looks quite a bit brighter than the Cubs future IMO.

I think CBJ or whoever has signed into his account is the only one arguing otherwise.

No money, no tradable assets to speak of, horrible offense, 40% of a rotation under contract after this year, weak farm.  Add Theo probably being gone after this season.  Nothing can ever diminish the pure joy of finally winning it all, but who would have thought things would have gone the way they have since.

I don't think that the Cubs trajectory since 2016 is shocking in retrospect.  They remained a good team with flaws, particularly lack of offensive consistency with poor contact ability.  It is disappointing, however, that the high level of play seen in 2015 and 2016 fell off as much as it did.  The current level of offensive ineptitude is likely just a short term problem, but the problems we have seen over the past few years will remain even when the current group gets back to "normal".  The roster will need to be changed to achieve better balance between power, patience, and contact.

Early in 2017 when Joe said he didn't want to push the team too hard and didn't want to stress the need to repeat for fear of putting too much pressure on the boys, I had to sit back.  Joe had managed the World Series with fear dripping from most of his moves, now he was trying to coast?   I really think the first 2 months of 2017 ruined this collection of players.

The Cubs future depends on who is retained.

The White Sox are a good team. they have had a lot of BABIP luck as a team.

Look at Eloy he is currently slashing .288/.327/.545.  Last year he had a .267/.317/.513 line.  His HR pace has gone from 52 to 41 on a 162 game season and he's BABIP around .327.  Take away a little BABIP luck and his line is starting to look a lot like last years.  Tim Anderson has had about 700 PA of a .400 BABIP, is that going to continue?  They strike out a fair amount and don't walk.  This isn't an offensive juggernaut.

The Dodgers and Padres are just better, by a large amount.

Thank goodness the Reds started so slowly. About to win their 8th in 9.

A shoulder injury has ended Cole Hamels' season with the Braves.

Since he only got 10 outs this year and he'll be 37 next year, he'll probably be available for something close to a minor league contract this offseason. The Cubs are going to go cheap on filling out the pitching staff, so I wouldn't mind if they bring him back to compete for a spot in the rotation.

Fangraphs was only giving the Cardinals a 1.7% chance of winning the division before today.  It feels like it should be higher.

I can easily imagine the White Sox sweeping the Cubs in that season-ending series, and I can easily imagine the Cardinals going 6-2 or thereabouts in their remaining games.

With the playoffs being such a crapshoot I just want to see the Cubs win the division.

With the Royals leading the Cardinals 12-1, our old pal Mike Montgomery is in to do his old team a solid by shutting them down in the late innings.  Looks like they won't gain ground on us today.

Cardinals lead the Brewers 3-1 in the 4th and will only be down 2.0 games if they hold on to win.

I wish I could bet on them winning the division; the odds may say that the Cubs have a 97% chance, but it feels a lot lower than that.

So, do you root for the Cardinals and hope that you win the bet?

No; the money would be a tiny consolation that wouldn't make up for the Cubs having failed to win.
