MLB is making rumblings about cracking down on sticky substances and Bauer’s average spin rate dropped around 200 rpm in this start. Cole had a similar drop in his spin rate as well in his last start.

And I still don't get how these pitchers are doing it.  Good grief, they throw almost every pitch out.  One pitch touches the dirt, out it goes.  Fly ball?  Out it goes.  It's like Yogi used to say, everyone watches the pitcher, and they forget there's another guy who handles every pitch.  Remember how the ball stuck to Yadier's chest protector a couple years ago and he couldn't find it.  He shook a lot and the ball didn't fall.

Derrick S. Goold @dgoold
Home run leaders for 2018 Memphis #Redbirds

1. Tyler O'Neill - 26
2. Adolis Garcia - 22
3. Patrick Wisdom - 15
4. Rangel Ravelo - 13
5. Luke Voit - 9
6. Oscar Mercado - 8
7. Carson Kelly - 7
8. Lane Thomas - 6
9. Randy Arozarena - 5

They still have O'Neill, but the Cardinals have made some questionable personnel decisions lately when they let 2, 3, 5, 7, and 9 get away.

In their last 35 games, DBacks are 5-30.

On the subject of Yu, another guy who’s had velocity gains into his 30s is DeGrom, only his have been much more dramatic.  He’s in his age 32-33 season and averaging 99.3 on the fastball, after having been in the 93s a few years after TJS.

I have no idea if he’s one of those guys using sticky stuff - presumably yes, since they pretty much all do.  But that wouldn’t explain a guy consistently adding major velocity well into his 30s.  I don’t know anything that does explain it, honestly.  But it should be getting more attention that he’s having possibly the most dominating season by a starting pitcher in MLB history.

DeGrom has been unbelievable this season!

Having grown up as a shortstop saved a LOT of young bullets that other Ps fire.

I'd wonder if not having the normal teenage wear and tear is a key part of the reason why he seems to throw HARDER about every season!

Also, all who've watched him play a ton over the years say he's a truly phenomenal athlete, who is also ultra competitive!

Aroldis Chapman had a 5-3 lead with no one on base. Five pitches later, the Twins won 7-5.

Those five pitches: Polanco single, ball 1 to Donaldson, homer. Astudillo single, Cruz homer.

Interesting point about the shortstop thing - maybe it’s a case of it’s not the years, it’s the mileage.  He is indeed a great athlete - an excellent hitting pitcher too.

I can see why Chapman threw almost nothing but sliders after giving up that homer to Davis.  When he throws sub 96 down the middle with zero movement he can get crushed.  Been waiting for the Cubs come up to Target Field for a while...

Padres have signed Joe Beimel to a minor league contract. He's 44 years old and hasn't pitched in the majors since 2015. He has apparently been throwing in the mid-90s recently, which is surprising considering he topped out at 91-92 for most of his career.
