Cardinals writers will regard every catcher as an “adequate defender” when comparing them to Molina…

Lot of buzz the Yankees are swooping in on Correa.

I think this originated with Olney, though. Isn't he a surrogate for Boras sometimes? Seems like he's often the guy who is bringing up the "mystery team" when the market starts to slow down.

Probably did start with him, but Olney does break stuff sometimes.  There was also a report that the Giants “hadn’t talked much” with Correa, which is equally odd.

As I understand it, the report was Yanks working on “something big” [not including Rodon] and Olney (and others) taking a guess it might be Correa.

That’s not the same as a report pinpointing a serious negotiation with Correa. It’s a guess based on less specific information.

Buster is a good reporter, so likely there’s something there. Maybe Correa, maybe a trade, maybe something else.

Not the typical kind of report.

Kodai Senga says that he will announce his decision tomorrow on a popular Japanese show. He also says that the three finalists are #Mets , #Cubs , and #Padres.

So we're competing against the two teams spending like drunken sailors this offseason.  This should go great.

Maybe the takeaway here is how absurd the idea that signing Swanson should take the Cubs out of signing anybody else they want is?  Cohen is one thing but if the Padres can do it, for cripes sake...

The time has come for the Cubs to draw a line and make a statement.  You have to make a splash signing this time - identify the guy, whoever it is - Correa, Swanson, even Senga - and say "we're not losing him, he's ours."  That's the first step, not the last.

To further elaborate, this is the original tweet from Senga saying he's appearing (it's a NPB awards show).

As far as the announcement and three finalists part, there's a lot of chatter about it in English but I haven't been able to find a tweet from Senga or a Japanese source confirming that.  It may very well be true but it may just be a rumor.

Jeff Jones
@jmjones
Contreras said he started imagining himself as a Cardinal the day he saw Albert Pujols hit his 695th homer. Said he was on the IL, watching from the bench, envisioning playing for a team with that kind of tradition and celebration.

That would have been September 4th.

No slap at the Cubs in that.
