What really stinks about it is the WBC could actually be a really great event at some point.  I was watching a tiny bit of the Japan-Italy game this morning, and the Japanese fans sold their stadium out and were really enthusiastic about it.  For it to ever really be great, though, it needs to be held in season and not be treated here as glorified spring training.  An injury like Diaz in spring training is just the kind of thing that will keep it from ever happening and might even actually kill it off.  It's literally the biggest nightmare scenario teams have when they send their players off for it.  It especially stinks when it happens in an event most of us consider a glorified exhibition instead of a major international event.

It already is a great event internationally.  The Japan-Korea game drew a bigger TV audience than any MLB game in history.  The Diaz injury was just stupid, a fluke.  But if guys are going to play baseball games some of them might get hurt.  Soccer players get injured playing in the WC and Olympics.  Hockey and Basketball players get injured in the Olympics.  It happens, but they still go.

I used to hate the WBC because of how much hatred it stirred up between nations.  Anyone remember Korea planting a flag on the pitcher's mound ater defeating Japan?  Supposedly Ichiro went on an anti-Korean tirade in the clubhouse after that.  All because the rosters are set based on nationality and not on where they're playing right now.

The Caribbean nations seem to be having so much fun with it, though, that I always get excited seeing them play.  And I love seeing smaller countries like the Czech Republic make progress.

Incidentally, our guy Miles Mastrobuoni came within a few feet of hitting Italy's first-ever WBC homer, but it was caught at the track by Yoshida.  Would have been a great moment for him.

Javier Assad’s day is done after 4 strikeouts, 1 hit and 1 walk over 2.2 innings of relief.

A stellar tourney for the young #Cubs pitcher who kept both the USA and Puerto Rico at bay.

And now Altuve probably has a broken thumb. My fantasy team is having a bad WBC.

AZ Phil suggests that the Altuve injury opens up an opportunity to trade Madrigal to Houston.

Cub fans and reporters continue to be the only people that think Madrigal has value. Houston had better internal options then Madrigal.

Just watched the Mexico-Japan game.  Absolutely crazy.

I want the US to win the final, but if Japan beats us tomorrow, I hope Darvish is the winning pitcher.
