This is from another topic (Today’s Game) that is more approprIately posted here.
It sure looked to me like the hitters knew what was coming, at least for his first few appearances. Not a single swing at a curveball, etc. Most of the posters seemed to think the same thing. Still,
Because you seem receptive to feedback, however, let me point out a danger of your posting style. To me, it comes across as argumentative above and beyond what's necessary. For some posters with a similar style, it comes across as a desperate attempt to demonstrate that they are the smartest guy in the room. We know you're smart, and I don't think that's it for you--you just like to argue and want to convince people that you're right. It frequently comes across as condescending. Most of us don't like to argue for the sake of arguing, so it can be annoying. I feel pretty confident that Curt is annoyed by the exchange. I know it just feels like an exchange of ideas to you, but if I were Curt I might feel like I had to defend my point, which would take time and energy. I might just say 'screw it,' and not post, especially if I was going to rely on something that smacks of hearsay, about which you seem oddly obsessed. I mention this because I think shutting down other posters is absolutely not what you want, but it could happen. Also, and perhaps more importantly, I would much rather read Curt's anecdotal thoughts than your arguing about why you're right.
First, I think it’s a bit weird to post something almost entirely about another poster’s posting “style. In passing, fine, but, more than that, a bit weird.
But, since it came up....I try to be factual. That’s my “style.” I have zero interest in offending Curt. I think the only offensive thing anybody said in our exchange was Curt telling me to “go back to my books and stats.”
If you feel it is condescending when I note that hearsay does not trump facts, or make other factual points, I don’t see it that way. I realize that some posters just want to make a point about this or that and don’t want an exchange of views. For that reason, I don’t comment on plenty of posts. But, most folks here ARE interested in an exchange of views. That is the informative part and I learn a lot from that. (And, I get WAY more insults back at me than I dish out). If you want to consider that “arguing” I get that but I don’t look at it that way. I hope nothing discourages anybody from posting. I doubt that happens.
Let me suggest that you weigh in on substantive stuff and cut the stuff about anybody else’s “posting style.” Fair to point out misrepresentations or the like but beyond that: well, it’s poor form most of the time
