Moore is a hard pass for me. Hopefully it’s Law trying to sound smarter than everybody else as usual.

14. Chicago Cubs: Malcolm Moore, C, Stanford
This connection keeps coming up, as the Cubs do lean heavily on their model, and Moore has excellent batted-ball data. I’ve also heard them with Christian Moore and Waldschmidt.

Law does mocks off of what he is hearing, not what he would do.  He has Moore rated much lower.  Shaw seemed like a really great target last year.  Moore isn’t really exciting me with what is being written about him.

Mayo put the Cubs back with Cam Smith again the other day. Said they are also interested in other big college bats Waldschmidt and Moore.

I’ve been hoping Seaver King would make it to 14 but that seems increasingly unlikely.

Also, Mayo suggests FSU outfielder Tibbs for the Cubs is a possibility if he's still available.

Cubs have a dismal history drafting catchers going back to draft’s inception in 1965.

Never drafted a worthwhile catcher in first few rounds.

Drafted Josh Donaldson as a catcher sandwich first round but he didn’t stick at the position of course.

Probably best catcher drafted by Cubs was Geovany Soto as a 11th rounder. Rick Wilkins, a late round pick, had one terrific season. Joe Girardi, a 5th rounder, played 15 years in big leagues and accumulated 5 WAR in 15 years.

If Cubs want to take a first round high-risk guy (such as a catcher), why not instead take a HS pitcher who can throw the bejesus out of the ball and pray he can stay healthy. Teams frown on taking a guy like that first 10 overall picks and maybe Cubs can snag a high ceiling pitcher at #14.

Waldschmidt sounds interesting.

Waldschmidt has emerged as one of the better pure hitters in the college class this year, his second at Kentucky after transferring from Charleston Southern, hitting .370/.500/.653. I think there’s even more power to unlock here. He starts with a very wide base and no stride, limiting how much he can transfer his weight, yet he still rotates his hips well enough to drive the ball now with composite bats. He rarely misses fastballs (13 percent whiff rate during the regular season) and doesn’t chase much regardless of pitch type. He’s a solid athlete who should be an above-average defender in a corner, playing left for Kentucky this year. Even as-is he’s a first-rounder because of the feel to hit, with that opportunity for more power if he loosens up his stance and uses his lower half more.

Defensive value.  Makes contact and swing changes might unlock more power.

Fangraphs has them taking Moore the catcher.

14. Chicago Cubs: Christian Moore, 2B, Tennessee

Moore’s a big model darling now, as is his brother* Malcolm at Stanford (*note: they’re not actually brothers), and both seem high on the Cubs’ list based on what other scouts believe. I think the Cubs are a dark horse on Benge and Cijntje. They’ve taken players like Vance Honeycutt in the past, but never this hig

Jim Callis’s lastest mock

14. Cubs: Trey Yesavage, RHP, East Carolina (No. 11)
The Cubs also are holding out slim hopes for Kurtz, Rainer or Griffin. Yesavage would be a nice addition to a farm system lacking in pitching depth. With Tibbs and Moore gone in this scenario, hitting contenders would include Smith, Stanford catcher Malcolm Moore and King.

I know you're not supposed to draft for need, just for talent.  But isn't Christian Moore yet another 2B-defense guy?  If we've already got Shaw and Triantos as 2B-only prospects, would it be super wise to add another 2B-only guy?
