DeGrom is amazing and has some serious injury concerns.  The signing team is going to have to be ok with maybe getting a half season from him.  Throw in the fact that he's going to be really expensive and want to be with a contender, that doesn't seem like a Hoyer move.

Verlander might be the better option, but you would have to convince him that the Cubs are serious about being a World Series team most likely.

Senga seems like the most likely Hoyer target on the pitching side.

The off season is certainly going to be interesting.

Good notes, Blue.  I have no idea how the Cubs view or scout Senga.  *IF* they hypothetically envision him being a Stroman-caliber #2-ish guy, I'd be very happy to add a #2 with lots of of club control ahead.  Senga plus Smyly for rotation, I'd be happy with that.  *IF* you added a big-ticket SS who can hit and field too, that would be really fun.

Only one year left.  He'll be a free agent after the 2023 season.

Whoops.  That'd probably be a pass from me.

Willson Contreras "Reached Out to a Friend" With the Cardinals, Got a Positive Report

Quote
Contreras admitted he’s considered the opening on the Cardinals, and the friend with whom he spoke was Jose Quintana, who has been flourishing with the Cardinals since a midseason trade from the Pirates. (HOW DARE YOU, JOSE?!?!?) Contreras got a positive report from Quintana on the culture there. You can read more from Gordon Wittenmyer on Contreras’s impending free agency, and the possible Cardinals fit.

Kaplan said Molina has suggested to Cardinals people they should go after Willson too.

My Cardinal relatives are constantly telling me that St. Louis' front office is smarter than ours, especially since Theo left.

Evidently, Contreras work with pitching staff has improved a ton last week or so.

It's hard to imagine a team being more obsessed with catcher intangibles than the 2004-2022 Cardinals. It'll be really frustrating if/when they ignore the silly concerns about Willson's ability to handle a pitching staff and sign him to a reasonable deal.

The Cubs have been frustrating after they singed Darvish.  Why would this be any different?

Do you have anyone in mind?  I think your premise is OK, but I can't identify a suitable candidate.

Maybe the Cubs will trade for Stanton.  I don’t imagine the Yankees would get much for a 32 yer-old who just hit .210 effetively on a 5-year $125 million deal.

So, Cubs will be seeded #12 for the draft.

9.9% chance of a top 6 lottery pick
87.7% of picking #12 or #13
2.4% of lower than #13.

Rucker and Leiter Jr.—each with a scoreless inning in final game—get their ERA below 4.00 for the season.

Both pitched well in August/September.

Cubs have roster decisions with them.

McKinstry did the opposite, striking out in the ninth to lower his season average (adding his Dodgers and Cubs performance together) from exactly .200 to .199.   I wonder if he was aware of it.  He still hit .206 as a Cub; maybe that's what matters.
