Dylan Crews (#2 overall draft pick) at AA:  182-275-250 (51 PAs)

Matt Shaw at AA:   333-375-567 (32 PAs)

Of course, SSS and probably doesn’t much of anything, but fun with numbers while it lasts.
Perhaps Crews shouldn't have skipped high-A - bizarre move by an organization that just sacked a dozen minor league scouts and/or other personnel

Jefferson Rojas getting lots of attention at age 18 in full season.

Pedro Ramirez only a year older than Rojas is hitting a ton last 100 ABs. For the season, very similar numbers as Rojas.

Kalmer 3-3 with his 10th HR at MB, OPS up to 1.104.  Safe to say that level isn't worrying him too much.

HR #2 for Shaw at AA, oppo shot.

Wonder if the Cubs are going to try and tame that massive leg kick, or just ride it out as long as it works.

I have never seen it written out as a philosophy, but my impression is that they start working immediately on the pitchers, but let the hitters continue on until whatever they are doing fails.  I am sure that if something was REALLY holding someone back, they would step in sooner.

And promoting PCA to the Cubs (likely for the series at Coors).

Alcantara bumped to AA (for a few more ABs), and Horton keeps pitching.

Alcantara in Tenn's AA lineup tonight, playing CF.

14th-round reliever Frankie Scalzo, who Cubs seem reasonably high on, was promoted to Tenn, also, several days ago.

In 70 IP, Scalzo (low A, then hi A) had a 2.17 ERA, .195 BAA, .1.05 WHIP, 23 BB / 70Ks.

Scalzo started tonight and struck out the side in the 1st.  (game is in the 1st now)

It's been tough with Cubs losing 3 of 4 to AZ, 2 of 3 to Rox (last 5 of 7), but a bit of good news from AA:

Cade Horton with a decent (for him) start tonight: 4IP 3H 0R 0ER 3BB 3Ks.  60 pitches, 40 strikes.

For the season, his excellent stats (3 teams) are now: 84.1 IP, 1.33 ERA, 58 H, 7 HRs, 114 Ks - 24 BB (just under 5:1 ratio), .190 BAA, 0.97 WHIP.

Horton has been about as good as one could realistically have hoped.  Next year AAA and if he can handle that level, maybe beyond.

Baseball America recently released a list of top 20 prospects in the ACL; Alexis Hernandez with a slash line of 0.315/0.407/0.515 made the list at number 20.

"The younger brother of fellow Cubs shortstop prospect Cristian Hernandez, Alexis is a long, lean player with a chance to be an average defender at shortstop with an above-average arm. He’s a hit-over-power player whose ceiling might be lower than his production suggests thanks to an incredible BABIP of .494. Scouts think he could get to more power if he learns how to lift the ball without adding swing-and-miss to his game. He’s an average runner who could slow down as he matures."

September 14 Baseball America

Owen Caissie, OF, Cubs: It’s been a tremendous season for Caissie. On Wednesday Caissie collected a trio of hits raising his season line to .286/.398/.514 with 53 extra base hits over 117 games played. Caissie possesses plus-plus power with plus on-base skills. It’s just a matter of limiting swing and miss for the Canadian outfielder.

Two perfect innings with 3 Ks for Brown.  Conceivably could still be in the mix this season.
