Eugene finished with the worst overall record in the NWL ... Now they are in the championship series ..

How did that happen?

The NWL is split into two 4 team divisions (North and South). Eugene is in the South.
The season is split into first and second halves.
The winners of each half square off in the semi-finals.
However, if the same team wins both halves, the team with the second best record during the second half of the season advances to the playoffs.

Hillsboro won both halves in the South.
Eugene finished last in the first half.  Their 2nd half record was an underwhelming 17-21 but that was better than the records of Salem-Keizer (16-22) and Boise (14-24).

Reminds me of when the Cubs were fighting for the playoffs during the second half of the strike year despite a poor record.

The Emeralds rally in the 9th and win the NWL title on a balk with 2 out.

Ramos: 4-4-2-2-0-4

Even Jim DeShaies would have to admit that this was a legitimate balk call

The Cubs named Jared Young and Matt Swarmer their minor league players of the year.

Swarmer kind of got lost in the mix but had a nice season. He has extreme flyball ratios but is a big strike thrower. Should be a brjones fav.

Young came out of nowhere to excel at South Bend and hold his own at Myrtle Beach. Swing looks impressive on film.

Longhagen and McDaniel started up a weekly podcast for Fangraphs one of the topics they were discussing was kids in Arizona.  Cole Roderer was one of the guys they discussed.  Apparently teams that liked him were comping him to Benintendi as a plus runner who could play CF.  McDaniel and Longenhagen said he is much closer to the Benintendi comp so far.

The Arizona Fall League is loaded with top prospects, including 15 players from MLB Pipeline's Top 100 Prospects list. However, those aren't the only prospects that will be taking the field on Tuesday when the season begins in Arizona.

The top prospects may be the big draw, but there will also be some hidden gems on the field. With that in mind, here are 30 sleeper prospects -- one from each organization -- to keep an eye on during the Fall League season.

Cubs: Justin Steele, LHP (Cubs No. 8)
Steele was just starting to come into his own when he blew out his elbow in August 2017, but he returned to the mound earlier than expected (11 months later) after Tommy John surgery. He can run his fastball up to 97 mph, also can dodge bats with his curveball and has made encouraging progress with his control and command.

Apparently swearcheck doesn't like the number "8" followed by a ")"

It's an emoji, nothing to do with swearcheck.

I think Steele was on Theo's mind when talking about pitching coming up through the minors to help next year.

Quote
The Arizona Fall League got underway last night, with the Mesa Solar Sox (the club with Cubs prospects on it) winning their opener despite facing an absurd outing by top Astros pitching prospect Forrest Whitley (dude struck out the first seven batters he faced). Nico Hoerner was one of those strikeout victims, and, in his first action since injuring his elbow a couple months ago, he struck out three times in four at bats. He was the only Cubs prospect to see action.
