Six Tennessee batters, six strikeouts.  This Perez cat is scary.

Brown looks like a reliever to me.  High-leverage, yes, but not a starter.  I guess we will see.

He’s very much a work in progress and he may flame out altogether.  But for me he’s one of the few SP prospects we have who fits the profile on a traditional right-handed power starter.  He throws hard, has great movement, and misses a ton of bats.

This has been a really fun and interesting minor league season.  Lots of stories, and lots of guys who it will be fun to follow next year.  I'm very sad to see it come to an end!

Thanks for all the box scores, Chris!

Nice to see Davis and Canario kick off their race to Wrigley by finishing with HRs.  Davis will certainly want to forget the results this season but getting back on the field was the main thing.

Is is possible that Canario or Davis starts in CF on opening day, 2023?  With Happ and Seiya in the corners, regular starts in the OF will likely be in CF only next year.  After that, there's the question of whether they will extend Happ (who is useful as a switch hitter and good defender).  Perhaps in 2024, PCA arrives to take over CF in which case the issue of OF LHedness would be less of a factor. It seems likely down the road that Davis and Canario will become redundant and a choice will need to be made.

Maybe, but think there could be a choice right now among young Cubs OFers, given the 40-man crunch.

Velazquez now seems like a less-promising version of Canario and a guy that has upside and some trade value. Would not be surprised to see Velazquez moved for a non-Rule 5 eligible prospect or to fill another need.

I agree.  Several of the current Cubs are decent but not MLB starter material.  They already dumped Hermosilla (sp).  Rivas and Quiznos, the sandwich guy, and a couple of the pitchers, are just not going to cut it.

I'm not ready to call Happ a good defender  - let's see how flukey this year's numbers end up being.  But the issue of left-handedness is not going away even if PCA is an opening day (or close) player in 2024.  The Cubs as currently constructed are glaringly weak from the left side, and most of their best prospects and guys they're rumored to be in on (shortstops) are RH hitters.  Maybe Mervis proves that results trump scouting and manages to be a middle of the order hitter, but this is an area where you figure they're going to have to supplement from the outside.

I certainly think Canario and/or Davis could wind up playing a lot in CF next season, and in a perfect world it's nice to imagine the two of them and PCA make Happ obsolete.  But the odds are pretty low that all three of them pan out.  There are a lot of uncertainties with Happ, given how inconsistent his performance has been over his career.  Use next season to assess and make a decision at the deadline when - despite the insistence of the Brett Taylors of the world - it's very likely the Cubs will be selling again.

For-pay article.  But has hitting-coach justin Stone providing some comments on six secondary prospects:
1.  BJ Murray
2.  Slaughter
3.  Nwogu
4.  Strumpf
5.  Pagan
6.  Perlazza

Not much info in it.  Mooney hyperbolizes "Davis finished last season on a tear at Triple-A Iowa"; in reality, he went 3-for-27 over his last 8 games.  Little info about how his recovery is doing; whether this back issue was bothering him already last season.  "I couldn’t sit down straight or like watch TV (comfortably). It sucked. And then like trying to compete on the field, too, it just wasn’t a recipe for success. I’m happy to be past that and continuing to build and getting back to where I know I can be.”  "Past that" sounds good.  "Davis’ offseason plan revolves around getting at-bats with the Mesa Solar Sox after playing in only 53 minor-league games this year (.597 OPS) and adding more strength to his 6-foot-4, 205-pound frame."  So, adding strength is a goal.

It would obviously be really cool if he emerged as a legit starter-caliber big-leaguer over the next couple of years.  *IF* he could emerge as an **asset** starter, that would be so valuable.  But, time will tell, he's kinda been more of a projection guy than big-results guy.  (.255 career average, .444 slugging, lots of K's, his hitting or power history isn't really super compelling, it's more projection.).

His long-legged running combined with a good arm project well for OF defense.  I do wonder whether being so long-levered, whether he might actually end up having potential as a good-fielding 1B?  In the unrealistic hypothetical that Happ, PCA, Suzuki, and Canario all ended up being good and being ahead of him in the outfield, and that Mervis was to never have the defensive capacity to be a primary 1B, might Davis be a pretty quick rangy defensive 1B?  I know, dumb to waste a rangy good-armed OF at 1B; and dumb to imagine that all four of Happ-PCA-Canario-Suzuki will both be here and be good two years from now.  Just kinda fun to imagine.

Mervis and Davis have homered today.  Caissie is lagging behind with only a double.

From the Athletic article on Mervis.

"As the Cubs weigh their options for first base next season and think about how they want to rotate designated hitters in the future, Banner offered this view of the 6-foot-4, 225-pound slugger: “Another piece of this that people don’t talk about is he’s actually a good defender at first base. I know he’s a big guy and he might look like he’s lumbering, but he’s very athletic and he does a lot of things well.”

Thanks, Dave.  That's really interesting.  It would be so huge if he turned out to be a serious hitter, without being a liability defensively.
