The Bulls were 5th in the league in payroll this year and they were over the tax threshold last season and would have been again without trading Deng.

They don't want to be over the threshold which is why they dumped Deng for next to nothing.

They don't want to be over the threshold which is why they dumped Deng for next to nothing.

Being over the threshold two years in a row magnifies the penalties exponentially, so it's not hard to understand why they'd trade Deng rather than lose him as a FA and get nothing back at all.

Trading Deng was a brilliant move.  Their offense and defense improved when he left.  He did nothing for Cleveland.  He was a system player, nothing more.  He was certainly not worth keeping for the repeater tax.  If the Bulls wanted to have any shot at an impact player in free agency, they had to get rid of Deng's salary.

Trading Deng for next to nothing isn't brilliant. And it probably should be remembered that the Bulls had the best defense in the league two of the years Deng was there.

Or you could have kept him and let him leave for no return whatsoever, gone into the repeater tax and torpedoed any chance of making an impact move in FA this offseason.

Blackhawks blew a 2 goal lead in about 2 minutes.  Geesh, it's a Chicago epidemic.  I think I need a break from sports for a while.  Either that or I need to become a Heat fan.  They got guys like Norris Coles and Birdman Anderson playing out of their minds for them and if anything goes wrong they can just drive the ball into an opponent and flop for free throws.  Ugh what a week.

Once Rose went down any chance of sniffing a title went with him.  At that point paying the repeater tax would have been as dumb as giving Soriano an 8 year contract.

I guess I was wrong about the Hawks getting swept.  Still it's going to be tough to win in St. Louis.

8 threes for Dunleavy, breaking Jordan's playoff franchise record.

So for the Bulls to win, they need Dunleavy to hit 8 threes and for Nene to get tossed. That doesn't seem like a sound strategy going forward.
Thibs will probably figure out something else.

And TSN had this to say about the Blackhawks:
Including last year's playoffs, in games 1,2 & 3 of each series the Hawks have a 7 - 8 record.

In games 4,5,6 & 7 the Hawks have a record of 12 - 1.

Once the Hawks figure you out, its over.

I'm not so confident that past performance is highly predictive.

Well, recently the Cubs have been historically bad.
