The problem, I would argue, is not with golf officials but golf rules. Which are stupid in many instances, including this one. The officials enforced the rule as written.
If a player incorrectly marks the ball, I don't have a problem with the 2-stroke penalty. It is what it is. My problem is with penalizing a player for incorrectly signing a scorecard when THE SCORECARD WAS CORRECT WHEN THEY SIGNED IT. It was the LPGA's error in not catching this before she signed the Saturday card, not Thompson's. Why the f uck should she be penalized an extra two strokes for THEIR mistake?
I also have a problem with the officials telling the player in the middle of their round, which is a huge emotional blow. They did the same thing to Dustin Johnson at the U.S. Open last year, but at least it was in the middle of the same round. The problem there was they didn't decide whether to assess the penalty until after the round was complete - which meant all the players in contention (including Johnson) had no idea what the leaderboard was. And that dramatically impacts the way you would play the final holes.
