In those years rutgers was not in the best of conferences. Schiano did great in the C-USA. Kiffin did it in the Pac-10 and SEC.

Fair enough point, although Lane never really did much of anything in the SEC and Pac-10 as a head coach.

If we end up with Kiffin or Gundy we'll have rolled around in a pile of dog **** and come out smelling like roses.

I think, at this point, it's fair to say that where ever Schiano goes next, he'll become a near Saban level coach, leaving Tennessee to kick themselves for decades.  Not like Saban was great at Mich State. 57% win percentage I think tho that could be wrong.

Mike Gundy?

Gundy would be a big time home run after the craziness the last few days.  Should have just gone to him from the start if they really are able to get him.

He's a great recruiter, good offensive coordinator.

I'm really familiar with Lane's work at USC.  You have to be a horrific recruiter to not bring in talent to that school.  Lane didn't recruit at the level Carroll did.  As an offensive coordinator he was a huge step from Norm Chow.  He did ok, but just like at Bama he had talent galore.  I could have done OK their.  As a ND fan I was sad when Lane was fired at USC.

Tennessee AD John Currie has made his pitch to Mike Gundy today in Dallas. Oklahoma State is home for Gundy, but he talked last week by phone with Peyton Manning and was impressed. Vols are prepared to make Gundy one of the SEC’s highest paid coaches if he takes the job.

Tennessee ending up with Mike Gundy after trying to hire Greg Schiano would be like ordering tofu and ending up with a bone-in ribeye.
