It's risky. Donovan left OKC because he didn't want to be part of a rebuild. How patient is he going to be when it comes to developing young talent? It's risky because by hiring Donovan AK is committing himself to an all-or-nothing attempt to turn it around quickly, which may mean giving up on some of our young guys with potential before we know what they can be with decent coaching. There are also quite legitimate questions about Donovan as an Xs and Os coach, given his repetitive first round exits from the playoffs.
Donovan being the most high-profile guy on the market has nothing to do with whether he was the right guy or not. But that said, I still would have made the hire, even with the risks, because hiring Donovan makes a statement that the organization is serious again and that was necessary going into 21-22 free agency. Hiring a first-time coach like Unseld Jr. or a guy known as a developer like Atkinson would have been safer choices, to be sure. But the Bulls probably needed to be bold, and that's what they did by hiring Donovan.
