Is anyone here well enough versed in using MS Word to suggest how I can put text in a box (or table or whatever you want to call it -- I already have the box) and still have all of the lines of text numbered?

Thanks.... but I already know how to do that, and those suggestions do not appear to help assign line numbers to text which is in a box.

Let me explain what I am doing.

I have divided a page into two boxed columns, the one on the left being about four inches wide and the one on the right about two inches wide.  Those columns run the full length of the page.

Then I have cut and pasted ifirst column (the one on the left) the entire text of a novella for my students to read, and my plan is to have the column on the right for their notes and also for me to have definitions for the words they will not know in the text of the story, with most of the "definitions" being less definitions than references to pages and lines elsewhere in the story where they will find the same word, in order to allow them to make an effort to figure out the meaning from the context, since multiple references to the unfamiliar word will help in determining its meaning from context.

Of course to do this I need to be able to refer to the page and line where they will find the words elsewhere in the story, meaning I need to have all of the text of the story line numbered.  While it is simple to do when the text is not in columns in boxes, once it is in columns, the normal way of using line numbering appears not to work at all, leaving lines numbered neither in the columns nor outside.  And putting things in columns is needed in order to get the notes to the RH side either defining the unfamiliar words or referring students to other places in t text where they will find the words again.

Jes, I had to read your posts to figure out the weird link that Bearhit posted.

This may not help, but once your text box is selected and on your page, I think you just go back to your Word Home page and select the number system you wish to use.  Then once your number is shown, cut and paste, hit return, and the next number (2) should show up.  If that doesn't work, then I must not understand what you're doing.

If I'm understanding this correctly, you've got two columns each with one row.  One way to do this, and it's very tedious but it's the first thing that came to mind, is to paste your block of text into the left column. Then, make sure there is a break between each line and highlight the text or the entire column. Finally, select the "numbering" option (it should be a button in your home ribbon next to the bullet list option) and each line should be assigned a number.

Yes, I saw how that would work, with Word essentially numbering each line as if working with an outline and numbering each "paragraph" in the outline, and with each line serving as its own paragraph.... but I have 114 pages of text.  I don't see that option as practical.

Craig's suggestion works with columns, but not when the columns are pasted into tables, and the tables are needed to provide a working second column on the page for entering notes on the text in the column on the LH side of the page.  (I really hate MS Word.  Wordperfect is a vastly superior word processor.)

I don't know if there are any other Star Wars fans here, but a friend of mine sent me this link.  Maybe I’m weak minded and it was a Jedi mind trick, but I think I believe him.  Blew my mind.  If this is true, then Lucas is a genius and a coward.

Haven't seen the new one yet.  Always busy with work and kids it seems.  I will see around Christmas sometime.  Have you seen it?

I will say that the most convincing piece of the Jar-Jar Sith Lord argument for me was the tweet by the voice actor of Jar-Jar.

I have no idea what a Sith Lord is, but if it reminds you of me, he has got to be a good guy.

Sounds like your knowledge of the Sith is equal to your knowledge of baseball.
