I know this is a stupid question but something struck me as off — the mlb play by play gives the number of pitches and the number of strikes. Pitcher throws a ball outside and hitter fouls it off — that’s a strike of course, but is it a strike as far as balls and strikes thrown by the pitcher?
I have asked the same question on the subject of first pitch strikes. It looks as if anything that is swung at, regardless of being hit, is considered a strike. It is only considered a ball if it is taken and called a ball by the umpire.
