It seems like if we want to get the vaccination levels up in this country, we should just have Dusty do all the PSA's for it.

I know this is a stupid question but something struck me as off — the mlb play by play gives the number of pitches and the number of strikes.  Pitcher throws a ball outside and hitter fouls it off — that’s a strike of course, but is it a strike as far as balls and strikes thrown by the pitcher?

I have asked the same question on the subject of first pitch strikes.  It looks as if anything that is swung at, regardless of being hit, is considered a strike.  It is only considered a ball if it is taken and called a ball by the umpire.

Not a stupid question, dog.  Yes, swings and misses and fouls count as strikes for the pitcher.

  What a stupid question.

What about a hit?  I know it’s a pitch but does it count for a strike in the stats?  Has to huh?  Pitcher gives up three first pitch singles his line doesn’t read 3 pitches 0 strikes, does it?

But that’s probably it.  A hit is a pitch but neither a ball nor a strike.  That’s why, looking at Adbert’s number of pitches and number of strikes and doing the subtraction for number of balls it seemed too high.

Okay, all right, a hit is considered a strike.

What else would you call it?

It’s a pitch with no call by the umpire, obviously, and the batter swung. How could it be called a ball in the absence of a ump-called ball?

That leaves one option.

Just trying to get it clear (I watch these games on MLB live with computer images and multiple stats).  It felt wrong the other day and I thought maybe I’d missed something, like why is there a runner on second when it’s the top of the inning?  To confirm -  number of pitches thrown followed by number of strikes (that’s what they give you on MLB) leaves by subtraction the number of balls.  And the only way for a pitch to be scored a ball is by the umpire.

Those uniforms would have looked good with the 1914 cap.  I always wished the Cubs would come up with an alternate around that cap.
