"Simply" and "woman" cannot be in the same sentence.

You see how underlying and deceitful prejudices are . . . Why do I refer to Barb Johnson as a woman writer?  Why don't I refer to her simply as a writer?

Because most writers have been men.  There is nothing prejudicial in pointing out the unusual, unless you are indicating approval or disapproval.

"Because most writers have been men."

In the past, yes; today, no.

Which is why I used the term "have been".

"Because most writers have been men.  There is nothing prejudicial in pointing out the unusual, unless you are indicating approval or disapproval." was your whole quote.  You can't point out the "unusual" if it is no longer unusual.  Your "have been" clearly referred to the present as well as the past.  And the sun rises in the east and the sky is blue.

P2, don't know if you watch any of the Travel Channel.....Anthony Bourdain in particular.  He's got a new show called The Layover.  Last week he was in SF.  Went to lots of interesting, off-the-beaten-path type places.

Wish I had seen this before we moved away.  Would've liked to have visited these places.

The show was hilarious.  Bourdain loves to drink and that he did.  Dude was wasted towards the end of the show.

When Mrs. CurtOne and I went to SF last January, we took a pro tour on a bus.  We and this couple from England rented the whole full-size tour bus.  The driver took us places I never knew existed, and I thought I knew San Francisco pretty well.

I remember a famous columnist from SF who said one time he had spent every one of his vacation there and still hadn't seen it all.  Herb Caen?  That sound right, P2?

Even if it is not unusual, merely pointing out that a writer was of a specific sex is not  in itself prejudicial.  The term prejudice indicates prejudgement, and the mere mention of sex is hardly a judgement.  If one infers something from that, it is more a statement of their own prejudices than that of anyone else.

Bourdain was hilarious when the show went to Amsterdam. He clearly didn't like the food choices he had there, but obviously enjoyed the other things the city has to offer.

They butcher too many animals on Travel Channel shows. Especially on Andrew Zimern's show.  I haven't watched religiously, but I think I've seen only one thing that he couldn't stomach.

I like Bourdain's No Reservations.  His Layover: Miami seemed a little too contrived.

The only thing I've seen Zimern fail to eat was a durian fruit. I think it was in Thailand. Pretty unusual that a fruit would stop him when I've seen him eat so many other disgusting things with no problem

Okay, had to look that up. From wikipedia:

Chef Andrew Zimmern compares the taste to "completely rotten, mushy onions."[24] Anthony Bourdain, a lover of durian, relates his encounter with the fruit thus: "Its taste can only be described as...indescribable, something you will either love or despise. ...Your breath will smell as if you'd been French-kissing your dead grandmother."[25] Travel and food writer Richard Sterling says:

... its odor is best described as pig-****, turpentine and onions, garnished with a gym sock. It can be smelled from yards away. Despite its great local popularity, the raw fruit is forbidden from some establishments such as hotels, subways and airports, including public transportation in Southeast Asia.[26]

Other comparisons have been made with the civet, sewage, stale vomit, skunk spray and used surgical swabs.

YUM!

Just caught a few minutes of Shipping Wars.  Sheesh, they can add drama to the most brain dead jobs.  I cannot wait for Retirement Home Janitor coming this February.
