Agree with Deeg that another great job by the bullpen tonight.

Five scoreless innings and only hit was the lackadaisical play by Hoerner on the easy Ramirez grounder.

First two 94 mph four seamers, third one 76 mph but Baez must be seeing the ball now. Good job Javy! Cubs win!

Cubs magic numbers:

Win the division: 8
Make the playoffs: 5

Also, their magic number to finish with a better record than the Braves is 10, which would likely make them the second seed in the NL. It might actually be 9, because I think I saw a tweet earlier today that said the Cubs would win the first tie breaker if they finish with the same record as the Braves.

Gave Javy a pitch to hit for some reason.

That wasn't a bad pitch at all, actually.

It was a bad pitch for an 0-2 count—-giving Baez something he could reach.

Guessing that Maton would tell you ball not where Maton wanted it in that count.

David Ross makes some very curious in game moves. Those PH decisions make no sense.

Quantrill has huge career splits, so lefty Kipnis for righty Maybin is a good move there.

I wonder if pinch-hitting Vargas for Hoerner had something to do with Hoerner’s lackadaisical play in top of the inning on the Ramirez grounder. Sending a message to the youngster, maybe? In any case, Vargas gave Ross another lefty v. righty there but that’s Vargas’ weaker side.

Yeah.  Javy looked to have no chance against the fastball, and was swinging very aggressively.  Should throw a chase pitch, not a strike.  And certainly not an off-speed strike.  Throw chase-pitch offspeed, or a chase fastball up.

Wasn't a strike though - it was a good six inches off the corner.  Not a lot of guys could do anything with that pitch, but unfortunately for Maton Javy is one of them.  Just because of how aggressive he is it would have been smarter to bury that pitch in the dirt (if you trust your catcher) but it wasn't a bad pitch.  Just not perfect.

It might be a good pitch in, say, a 2-2 count. Context is important. The count is sacred in baseball and has a lot to with how a player should proceed.

Throwing Baez a breaking ball he can reach 0-2 is a bad pitch in this context. Very doubtful that Maton intended that pitch to be where it was.

Yeah, I think the moves could be explained entirely on basis of lefty-righty.

But that was a really bad, unaware play by Hoerner.  Not sure if good ones have some peripheral vision that guides, or just scouting-report mental clock, or what.  But it's pretty rare to see a flagrant blunder like that in mlb.  A great learning opportunity for a young player, and kind of great to have that happen without actually costing a run or a win.

I didn't see the blunder.  Is a video available somewhere?

You're both right. It was a very good 0-2 pitch to just about any hitter except Javy. Another high fastball or a slider low and away in the dirt, and he likely K's swinging.

Curt, it was a routine grounder to Hoerner in short RF. He fielded it cleanly, then gave it a glove tap, a crow hop, and then made the throw. Ramirez was busting it the whole way. Hoerner thought he had more time than he did. Most runners probably aren't killing it down the line on a ball like that...Ramirez was.

Yeah, Hoerner just wasn't aware.  Rizzo or Schwarber hit the same ball, they're out by plenty and he's got no reason to be alert or to hurry.  But Ramirez is really really fast, and Hoerner just had no awareness.  Often an infielder can kind of see the runner's progress and realize if he doesn't have time for taps and crow hops; and if you know it's a basestealing speedster rather than a Rizzo, you know you're going to need to be alert.

Ramirez is very fast with 30+ stolen base season, and as the leadoff guy and the winning run, he might perhaps have then stolen 2nd besides.  Fortunately he didn't steal, and Jeffress buzzed the next three guys no problem, so no harm was done.  But it really was a clueless blunder by Hoerner.  Good learning lesson that occurred at no cost.
