I don't think it's beyond the realm of possibility that Bryant gets DFA'd (though not likely).  Certainly he isn't going to bring much of anything of value in trade.
I think it is beyond the realm...

Kaplan said the Cubs are going to non-tender Bryant.  Did Theo suddenly become stupid?

I'm guessing Theo hasn't really sent Kaplan a note about that decision.  So I wouldn't trust Kaplan. :):).

I also think it could be more complex.

If you tender him, you're obligated to whatever leverage the arb process allows the player.  You could instead tell Kris, "We want you back, but we'll need a deal that isn't as expensive as Boras can get for you with the arb process as leverage.  We want you, but not at that price."

Obviously every team lost gobs of money, so I'm guessing some teams and players are going to need to adjust some expectations accordingly.  Bryant may be one of them.

Giving away a player of Bryant's talent for nothing is stupid.  Theo isn't stupid.

Gordon Whittenmeyer was on the podcast and he sounded like a more reasonable voice than Kaplan.

The Cubs have 3 options
1.) Blow up the roster and rebuild, which is where Kaplan is.
2.) Try and tinker with the offense and get a starting pitcher.  This seems more likely, but they have to be to find trade partners and the Cubs player are expensive.  Getting much back for them might be hard.
3.) Repeat last offseason.  Low cost players and try and catch lightening in the bottle.  I think this is the most realistic.

Happ, Darvish and Hendricks are probably your best trade pieces, but if you are moving them then it is more of a full rebuild.  Of the more realistic guys to get traded I think only Willson with an extra year of control could bring back something close to his value to the Cubs.  Maybe you try and swap out Schwarber for a righthanded hitter with more contact in LF or CF (and move Happ to LF), second could be another possible upgrade if they don't want to give the job to Horner.

If he's DFAed the FO knows something we don't.

I know it.

He's not that good.
He's got Hee Seop-sized holes in his swing and the league has figured it out.
His swing mechanics are funky and are taking a toll on his body.
He can't stick at 3rd
He's too laid back.  Doesn't provide much leadership in the clubhouse
He wants Bryce, Manny money.

I think there's very little chance of Bryant being a Cub past next year. He's had nagging injuries in three straight seasons, and he has been bad when he has tried to play through them. Players who start getting hurt a lot in their 20s usually continue to get hurt in their 30s. He just hasn't been healthy enough to justify paying him into his mid-late 30s.

I'd be shocked if they non-tendered him. But I wouldn't be surprised if the front office decides to trade him for underwhelming return because they feel they're better off having his money available to spend somewhere else. Same with Schwarber.

They'd take a bag o' balls for him at this point, but we'd have to throw in a good prospect.

.

Bryant was at $18.6 this year.  The Cubs may be unwise to assume they can easily and productively trade Bryant with an $18-20 contract.

GM/owners should be hesitant to assume that a general-access vaccine will have be available before the season opener, and that social-distancing will be history next season.  I suspect team budgets will not only be hurting from their losses this year, but will not be able to assume  full revenue next season either.

What happened? Why is this sitcom on? Supposed to be the pre game on TBS?
