Yu is using Rizzo's walkup song for his AB's too...gotta love that sense of humor...

Darvish post-game:

"I used that song because it was Rizzo who kind of took care of me when things weren't really working my way in Chicago," Darvish said through his interpreter after the Padres' 3-1 loss. "It was, in a way, to say 'thank you' to him. And obviously I have a good relationship with him....Looking back, I had some ups and downs in Chicago," Darvish said. "Good times and bad times, looking in retrospect. But what I find is that the fans, the organization, and even the media members there -- I had tremendous amount of support to get through my years there. So there's a sense of, I guess, gratefulness there.”

Yu is a good dude. Always has been.  Never sulked, never lashed out when things weren’t going his way.  And of course, one of the half dozen most dominant SP in baseball.  You’d sure love to have a guy like that on your team.

I agree as well.  I don't think it was a terrible trade, however.

The cubs hitters have seemed to be pretty good in terms of plate discipline.

But watching a couple of innings versus Darvish, his stuff really had them chasing a lot.  One of the Rizzo AB's, seemed like Darvish got him out on like 6 pitches, not one of which was actually in the strike zone.  (In the AB I'm recalling, I think maybe there was actually one pitch that he did take and was called a ball, but was the only actual strike that grazed a corner.)

Yu's ability and skill to get guys to expand and chase so often is really impressive, and obviously a factor in why he's so good.

Bummer bottom 1st.  Joc with a solid single, Bryant got ahead 3-0, and took a pitch that the tracker showed to be just barely low, but ump gave the strike.  Then Ross sent Joc on full count, and Bryant chased a breaking ball well off the plate for the K-throw DP.  Two chances to have two base-runners with no outs, and a great chance to score.

Great picture.  Wrigley Field is a sight to behold.  Is the statue of Harry still there where it used to be?

Stewart is really wild, and gives up a 2nd inning run.  Great play by Rizzo helped keep it.
Stewart's stuff seems to move a lot, and he doesn't locate it much.  Almost hit O'Neil on one breaking ball that was way off, then drilled him in the back on the next pitch.  Contreras sometimes targets off the outside edge, and Stewart's pitch end up off the inside edge.  Enough movement to compete, but hard to really be consistent with so little command.  And in a world with tons of velocity, probably kinda tough to be excellent as a soft-toss guy without command, even if the movement is really excellent.

Carpenter drove in the run, but Rizzo made a great cutoff-and-throw to 3rd to get Molina, otherwise could have been 1st-and-3rd with only one out and chance for bigger inning.

Stewart walked the pitcher Oviedo on 4 pitches in the 3rd, who then scored for run #2.  Joc HR pulls Cubs back to within 2-1.

Oviedo leads off the 5th, and Steward again walks him on 4 pitches.  Big tall pitcher with a huge strike zone, and Steward walks him twice on 8 pitches.

Kind of surprised that with Stewart super wild, with the Cubs still in the game only down by a single run, that Ross didn't have somebody kind of loosening up as Steward hits the 5th inning with the 3rd time through the order.  But Ross waits too long and lets the Cardinals set up a big inning before finally lifting Stewart.

Yeah, tough to win a game when you walk opposing pitcher leading off twice—on four pitches each time. Wow.
