Leiter is struggling with his control today.  He got through the eighth, but he hits a batter to bring the winning run to the plate in the ninth.

Wesneski has been impressive, no question.  Mostly against bad teams.  I wonder if he can sustain success as a SP relying so heavily on one pitch - no doubt the slider is very good, but the league catches on to things eventually.  Are his other pitches good enough to deal with that?

Leiter survives a very shaky ninth to end the game with a fly to center from Rodolfo Castro.

Great outing for Wesneski.

@MLBastian

Catcher Yan Gomes has now caught five Immaculate Innings: Hayden Wesneski (tonight), Kyle Finnegan (May 5, 2021), Stephen Strasburg (July 3, 2019), Carlos Carrasco (July 7, 2017) and Justin Masterson (June 2, 2014).

In 15⅔ innings Hayden Wesneski has given up 9 hits and walked 2 for a WHP of 0.70

Leiter threw 23 change ups tonight out of his 41 pitches and got 7 swings-and-misses out of the 23. One ball in play on the pitch, with soft contact.

That’s a really good pitch for him if he can throw it like he did tonight.

Leiter's combo of K rate, BB rate, and GB rate in relief this year is pretty special. Not saying it will continue into the future, but he's been great out of the pen.

McKinstry continues to hit like a guy who wants to stick around…

The thing is that he doesn't have to hit that much to be pretty valuable.  If he can land in that .675-.700 OPS range, he'll be rosterable.

McKinstry walks on a pitch right at the letters.  I can't understand this new strike zone in which seemingly anything above the belt is a ball.

After two walks with the bases loaded to let the Cubs tie the game, the Pirates suffer some tough luck: Quiroz hits a grounder with such a high chop that the infielders have no play; everybody is safe and the Cubs lead 5-4.  Bases still loaded; still one man out.

Pirates pitcher Manny Bañuelos makes an amazing play to get the Pirates out of the inning.  He throws what looks like a wild pitch -- it bounces high in the air, perhaps hitting the catcher's knee or foot -- and runs forward to grab it himself, tagging Morel as he tries to score.  The umpires call him safe but the call is overturned.  What an amazing play.

Cubs still lead, though we might regret not getting more.  Does the catcher get an assist on that play?

Javy would have been safe.

After the historical humiliation Javy gave the Pirates last season, I guess they deserve a highlight-reel play like that one.

And some nice range from Quiroz gets Ji-Hwan Bae, making his major league debut, out on a bang-bang play to end the inning.

Now let's get a few more runs.

With Manny Rodriguez in to pitch, Brian Reynolds hits a homer to center field to tie the game.  It didn't look like a homer coming off the bat, but it just kept carrying.
