Why does it have to be set before the season starts?  Why not establish a shadow league and adapt it when the time comes?

It doesn't I was wrong about that.  The playoffs are only allowed in head to head leagues.  For a point league like ours it would require copying the league and setting up the copy as a head to head to league and starting the playoffs.  That could be done the week the playoffs are starting.  You can also have a consolidation playoff round and give the those teams something to compete for..

Good.  That's what I was thinking from emails from Fantrax last year.  My thinking we could make the top 8 in the playoffs and anyone of the top 8 who didn't wish to participate could opt out, but Joe tells me that wouldn't work.  But I believe if we can have a playoff while finishing the regular season should satisfy everyone.

Minus the opting out wasn’t that just essentially voted down?

When we've talked about playoffs and potential formats, there have been maybe 4-5 of us that participate in the conversation and we all voted yes. So I'd like to hear from some of the people who voted against playoffs where they stand.

Are you completely against a playoff system? Or is it more specific to the format? Is there a format you would like, maybe something that's not necessarily head-to-head?

I'm just curious what the real source of disagreement is. Playoffs in general? Format? Something else? I think that's the first thing we have to figure out if we're going to try to implement something by September.

Actually I was opposed at first because my understanding was that we would stop the normal league and go exclusively to playoffs.  I believe others thought the same thing.  If we could have our cake and eat it too, that would be wonderful.  That's why I think we should talk about it more during the season and take a final vote.

I’m not looking to be a pain but I think playoffs solves some of the problems the league has had.

1. Almost every team can compete for a Top 8 spot which means they will watch their roster, make moves, and not trade away short contract players 1/3 of the way through the season when they see that they can’t win.

2. My decision and Matt’s are independent. He is an adult. With that said he doesn’t check this board very often as he is in school which has a handful of distractions that the other 15 owners (myself included) don’t have. I generally have to tell him to check the board.

3. I have an opinion about how the playoffs (if they are agreed upon) should be run but any format that includes 8 teams (or more) would seem to greatly improve the league and would keep owners involved.

4. I believe my team could have been in the top 4-5 last year but I knew I didn’t have a chance to win so I traded solid players for draft pick compensation so that I might be able to compete this year under the current rules.

5. I appreciate Joe’s kind words. I try to be prepared. I try to make my draft picks for the MiLB and MLB drafts within seconds of the prior pick being posted. I would enjoy having my team in the hunt all season. Unfortunately, unless I do really well in the draft I am short on some superstars that some other teams have so a “single winner” league would make it difficult.

6. I would like to participate again, but I feel like I would be spinning my wheels again for at least 1 more season. Staying on top of this board and my lineup when my team is possibly out of the hunt in June isn’t overly appealing.

7. The best team doesn’t always win the World Series. I think seeing 8 teams make the playoffs would create more fun. If the 8 seed wins….great for them!!

8. I get that I am a relatively new owner by this league’s standards so I will step down from my soapbox now.

If that is the concern we can have 162 game season so everyone keeps going but also have playoffs which start with 4-5 weeks left in the season.

Todd, you present a cogent argument for playoffs, but this is not the time or place.  The league needs a clear statement that you're in or out.  You are correct Matt's decision is his; we'll give it the weekend for him to make contact.

Okay, everyone is in.  Dave spin the wheel.

We will have some minor rule changes and we WILL discuss how an end of season playoff would work ALONGSIDE our regular season finish.  After the lottery.

March 4 all keepers, MLB and Minor league keepers due.    March 6 minor league draft.   MLB draft to be determined.  Check your calendars and gift us feedback on which days would be bad for you.

The Dodgers and Padres have a 2 game series in Korea that is part of the regular season on March 20-21. Do we need to get the MLB draft done before that? If we do, we might need to start a week earlier.

Thanks for the reminder.  We may have to do draft before the 20th or the Circle may have to grand an exception.

After reflection, I think we can finish the draft before that date if everyone pays attention and offers lists, especially when it gets past round 3.  The minor league draft usually only lasts a couple days, and the MLB draft can begin when it's over.  If we must, we can make the draft timed on the 18th and 19th.  Or, we can forego the no backdating that we enforce during the season and allow Dodger and Padre selections in the late rounds.  The root of the rule is that we don't want people selecting players because they hit two home runs the day before, but to select someone because they did well in the Korean series is foolish.  It would probably backfire by June and be costly to repair.
