Have I ever mentioned how ridiculous ticket prices are in St. Louis? The cheapest face value ticket for Saturday is $51, and that's for the worst seats in the stadium. That's just nuts.

To be fair: the Cardinals use those tickets as give away's, cheap season seats, and specials. For example: I will get several offers a year that I can go to a ballgame for $10 as part of a teacher appreciation. Or my high school baseball team will be given 100 tickets to sell for $20 and if they do, they get to go on the field and play for an hour after the Cards' game. And they get to keep the money.
By cheap season tickets, I mean for around $1000 you can get those seats all season long. At $50, that's a fourth of their value. And if you have a special event and need tickets to sell at auction or give away, they are very generous, and it's usually these seats.
So the seats aren't spectacular, you're in the ballpark.
As much as I dislike the Cards, they do some smart things to endear their fans and supporters.

The Cardinals and the Brewers have both commented that the lights in the new right field board make it hard for bullpen catchers to see pitches coming from relievers warming up. The Cubs say some ads have been adjusted.

Chicago Cubs. So here's the nuclear scenario. Like the Cardinals, the Cubs are one of baseball's signature, jewel franchises, and the two teams, because of geography and because of history, will always be connected. Since the Cubs have last won the World Series, the Cardinals have won 11. St. Louis has ruled the National League Central (and before that, East) while the Cubs have commonly finished in the basement. The Cardinals swindled the Cubs out of Lou Brock. This has been, roughly, 100 years of total Cardinals dominance over the Cubs. But they have never, not once, met in the postseason. Which means that if the Cubs were to somehow beat the Cardinals in the NLDS, almost all of those 100 years of history would be erased. Cardinals fans could cite the championships, Ernie Broglio, Bruce Sutter, all of it, and it wouldn't matter, because all a Cubs fan would have to do is say, "the 2015 NLDS," and it would win all arguments. Losing to the Cubs in the playoffs is, to put it mildly, a Cardinals fan's nightmare. (As I joked to one of my Cubs fan friends the other day, "My favorite team is the Cardinals. My second favorite team is the Cubs not winning the World Series.") If the Cardinals were to beat the Cubs if they play in the NLDS this year, it would be just one more log on the Cardinals Rule campfire. But if they lost, Cubs fans would never, ever let it go, and they would be right to. The Cardinals don't want to lose anyone this postseason. But they really, really don't want to lose to the Cubs. Which is yet one more reason for the rest of America to get behind the Cubs this October.

Busch is now the 11th MLB park I've been to. When I first walked in and looked around it looked very nice. Then the PA announcer started talking and was barely understandable, not that it mattered.
The scoreboard is terrible. Its primary purpose seems to be to play commercials. The lineups are there (unless it's between innings) but when a hitter comes to the plate his stats are so tiny they can't be read. The out of town scores are there but displayed on a hideous bright green background. You can see the scores but it is hard to tell which game it is in some cases.
I wouldn't say don't go there but don't expect too much.

If you have some time to kill in St. Louis, visiting the Cardinals Hall of Fame and Museum isn't a bad way to go. There are lots of videos to watch. The one of Lou Brock's hit reminded me that it was a liner off the pitcher that went into foul territory. Seeing Eddie Gaedel's 1/8 jersery was interesting. The few Tony LaRussa videos were as obnoxious as you would expect.

Nelly has promised to bring baseball Hall of Famer Mike Piazza back to eat in the rapper's hometown of St. Louis after Piazza spoke ill of the city's restaurant scene.
Piazza recently bought in an Italian soccer club. He told The New York Times for a story published last week that he had met with groups looking for expansion franchises in Major League Soccer. A St. Louis group is pushing for an expansion team, but Piazza told the Times, "I'd rather be poor in Italy than based in St. Louis. You can't get a good meal there!"
Nelly apparently bumped into Piazza and tweeted a video of himself with the catcher early Tuesday. Nelly promises to bring Piazza home to eat on "the hill," the city's hub for Italian cuisine.

There is so much comedy in here, I can’t pick my favorite. The current contenders are the question comparing Donaldson and Gyrko and a Goold answer in the Bryce Harper question where he says you can’t be sure that the Cubs 3rf starter will be better than the Cardinals 6th starter. I mean if they have 6 starters that are better than Lester, Hendricks, Quintana I’d actually be scared of the Cardinals.

To the surprise of no one, the Cubs and Yu Darvish agreed to terms on a six-year contract that will pay the RH starting pitcher $126 million.

Cardinals chairman Bill DeWitt Jr., president of baseball operations John Mozeliak and GM Michael Girsch are getting reviews nastier than leading “Worst Film of 2017” candidate “Mother,” starring Jennifer Lawrence.
Let’s clear some smoke and assess the Darvish damage.
1. Was anyone stunned by this? If so, why?
2. The Cubs already had the better overall team and a stronger rotation than St Louis.
3. The Cardinals had a more moderate, measured plan for improving their pitching for 2018.
4. So why have the Cubs outspent the Cardinals by a nearly 8-to-1 ratio so far this offseason?
5. The Cubs have put another $215 million on their long-term payroll commitments for a simple reason:

If you look at his minor league stats, they were not exactly calling out too loudly for him to ever be in the majors.
At 25, as a AAA OFer he hit .264 with a .678 OPS in 106 AB, and in 188 that year at AA he hit .301 with a .910 OPS in 163 AB.
At 26, as an AAA OFer he hit .324 with an OPS of .886 in 346 AB, and got a callup to the Cardinals, hitting .268 with an .824 OPS in 153 AB -- in other words, when he did well in the minors, he got called up, got some playing time, and did reasonably okay, but did not set the world afire.
The guy really has nothing to complain about regarding how the Cards used him or called him up.

Mikolas 6 ERA in 2 games against the Brewers, 1.28 in 2 games against the Reds.
His contact percentage of 82.4% is 12 worst in the majors and that is with people swinging at 39% of pitches outside the zone. My guess is that as the league catches up to him they are going to make him come into the zone more and his zone contact percentage of 92.5% will catch up to him. Only Felix, Godley, Blach and Chacin have higher zone contact percentages.
Of those 4 pitches on Godley is really doing well. He is also the only one of the group. Godley's outside zone contact percentage is 37.9%. The rest of them have an outside zone contact percentage of 59.7%-73.7%. Mikolas has a 68%.

This belongs in Politics, but I heard that stuff about Jason Heyward his first two years from the Cubs too from a few random Cubs fans I'd bump into. Seems like a struggling black player gets that tag a lot easier than a struggling white one does.
I'm not sure what's going on with Fowler this year, but there was definitely no reason to question his energy, effort, and hustle during his time with the Cubs, much less his first season in St. Louis. I have a hard time believing he just all of a sudden decided this was the year he was going to quit playing all out.

The Cardinals will name Mike Shildt as their permanent manager, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
The Cardinals are expected to make it official Tuesday afternoon. Mike Matheny was fired last month after the Cardinals began the season at 47-46, but they've gone 26-12 since Shildt took over and now find themselves with the top spot in the NL Wild Card race. Given his early success and experience in the organization, it was probably just a matter of time before the interim tag was removed.

Andy Martino of SNY.tv reports that the Yankees are "facing late competition" from the Cardinals in their effort to sign free agent starter Dallas Keuchel.
Martino also writes that the Braves and Twins remain involved, "though the exact level of their interest" is unclear. Mark Feinsand of MLB.com heard from a source earlier this week that the Yankees had emerged as the "true favorites" for Keuchel, but it seems the Cardinals are making a push. Keuchel is no longer tied to draft-pick compensation and should land somewhere soon, maybe even with a multi-year contract in hand. The veteran southpaw posted a 3.74 ERA and 153/58 K/BB ratio over 204 2/3 innings (34 starts) with the Astros in 2018.

In the latest updates on National League voting, the Cardinals did not have a player in the top three at any of the eight positions. (Pitchers are voted on by peers.) It is highly unlikely at this point that any Cardinal will advance Friday past the “primaries” and into the final vote for the starter.

My concern wouldn't be playing the Cardinals, but the downstream affects on the pitching staff of playing 2 double headers in 3 days. Expanded rosters help and if they could get a couple of complete games that would make life better too.

From the Cardinal blather machine: When the Cardinals recently moved prized free-agent acquisition Willson Contreras out of the catching position, the fiery veteran could have reacted with disgust and made an already bad situation worse. Instead, the 31-year-old Contreras never sulked, felt sorry for himself and made a major issue out of having his primary position taken away from him, while the Cardinals worked to steady their starting staff.
That professionalism from the three-time All-Star starter certainly didn’t go unnoticed by manager Oliver Marmol, who reinstated Contreras to the catching position on Monday to work with Jack Flaherty. Before Contreras caught for Matthew Liberatore on Wednesday, Contreras said he spent a few hours watching video of the 6-foot-4 left-hander late Tuesday to ready himself.
Again, the Cardinals have marveled at the preparation and preparedness of their new backstop -- even in the face of him having his position unceremoniously taken away from him for a stretch.
“He was unbelievable,” Marmol raved. “You’re talking about an extremely humble dude, who took everything in stride and saw [his catching removal] as an opportunity. It wasn’t always ideal, but one thing he did was he communicated well. It was really impressive. I couldn’t be more proud of the way he handled it.”

Actually, the piece that Curt posted is a good example of players having no real explanation why they’re not doing better. Very similar to the mythical TTTDTM syndrome and not hitting in clutch.
Read Wainwright’s remarks: “some things can’t be explained,” he says.
What does “urgency” actually mean in a baseball context? Wainwright tells us: need to “find ways to win games and not find ways to lose games.”

Wainwright might want to tone down the calls for urgency. If they were really making urgent moves, they'd probably release the 41 year old starter who has a 5.97 ERA.
