Title: Wild Card Chase
Post by: Dave23 on September 04, 2018, 09:49:09 pm
Today’s Game topic for the teams chasing us in the Central, as well as other divisional races...

Cardinals blowing out the Nationals, Brewers blowing out the Cubs.

It's far from a given that the Cubs won't be in the "Wild Card Chase" in a week or two.

The cubs are going to win 95 games.  They aren’t in the wild card chase.

The Nationals have conceded already

Hopefully they continue to lay down like this through the Cubs series this weekend.

Nationals within 2, 7-5

Now 7-6.

Cardinals hold on. Nationals had 2 on, nobody out in the bottom of the 9th and did nothing.

Again, I hope the Nationals keep being this bad for 4 more games.

The Cubs are 83-57.   Finishing the season 11-11 would put them at 94-68 for the season.

To reach 94 wins the Brewers would have to finish 15-6 and the Cardinals would need to go 16-6.

The Cubs still have 3 games versus the fading Nationals, 3 vs the Pirates, Reds and White Sox. I have a feeling they'll do a little better than .500 ball against those guys. I predict the cubs will clinch a week before the season ends.
Title: Re: Wild Card Chase
Post by: Jack Birdbath on September 07, 2018, 07:32:57 am
It will be interesting to see how they handle the last three games against the Cards. They won’t matter for the cubs for either the division or top seed but the Cards will still probably be playing for the WC or WC position.
Title: Re: Wild Card Chase

Tigers and Cardinals tied at 3 through 7 innings. Tigers had first and third, no outs for the top of the order in the 7th but couldn't manage to score.

Giants tie the Brewers at 2 in the 5th on an Alen Hanson homer.

Jeimer Candelario!   Walk off 2 run homer against the Cardinals.

Tigers score 2 in the first against the Cardinals.
Title: Re: Wild Card Chase
Post by: brjones on September 08, 2018, 07:19:00 pm
Tigers now lead 3-0 after 6 innings.

Brewers lead the Giants 3-0 through 4 innings. The Giants walked the first two batters of the Brewers' 4th and of course they both scored.

Gio Gonzalez seems to have remembered how to pitch now that he's with the Brewers, but he's the type of guy who has innings where he blows up pretty regularly.
Title: Re: Wild Card Chase
Post by: brjones on September 08, 2018, 08:20:45 pm
Ozuna 2 out game tying homer in the 9th. Tigers led the whole way, but blow it by allowing 1 in the 8th and 2 in the 9th.
Title: Re: Wild Card Chase
Post by: brjones on September 08, 2018, 08:25:13 pm
In better news, a Giants 2 run homer in the 8th cuts the Brewers lead to 4-3.

Kind of nice to see Norris completely imploding down the stretch. A Matheny guy is still undermining their chance at the playoffs.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) The game between the Washington Nationals and Philadelphia Phillies scheduled for Monday night was postponed because of rain. It was rescheduled as part of a traditional doubleheader Tuesday starting at 3:05 p.m.

Will this have any effect on when Scherzer makes his next start?

Brewers go up 6-3 against the Pirates in the 6th. The Cubs aren't getting any help from anyone the rest of this season. Too bad they couldn't put the Brewers away when they had the chance the last two weeks.

Brewers stretched their lead on a 2-run bunt double past the bag.

Cardinals lose, they fall to 5.5 back. It looks like they're done in the division again...but the Brewers were also 5 back about a week and a half ago.

Cardinals lose 17-4. They are now one game behind the Dodgers for the second wild card.

I'm shocked they weren't able to keep up their 75% winning pace.
Title: Re: Wild Card Chase

Yelich with his 30th homer to put the Brewers up 1-0 in the first.
Title: Re: Wild Card Chase
Post by: brjones on September 15, 2018, 08:37:54 pm
Brewers got a runner on third with no outs in the 7th, but the Pirates got out of it. Still 3-1 Pirates through 7.

Yelich/Cain due up 3rd and 4th in the bottom of the 8th, so getting the first two in the bottom of the inning would be pretty big for the Pirates.
Title: Re: Wild Card Chase

Leadoff walk to Thames in the bottom of the 8th. Not great.
Title: Re: Wild Card Chase

Ground out, Thames to second, Yelich and Cain with a chance to do some damage.
Title: Re: Wild Card Chase
Post by: brjones on September 15, 2018, 08:47:00 pm
Ground ball to third, Thames caught in a rundown. Poorly executed by the Pirates, but Thames eventually runs out of the base line. 2 outs.
Title: Re: Wild Card Chase

Going to the bottom of the 9th, Pirates lead 3-1.
Title: Re: Wild Card Chase

First and second, no outs for the Brewers. Not good.

They're heading towards the bottom of the order, though, so maybe Vazquez can get out of it. Moustakas batting against a good LHP.

Line out to SS on a full count, almost had a chance to double off Braun. 1 out.

Easy fly out to CF, 2 outs.

Schoop is the Brewers last chance.

Wow, Cubs pick up huge game on Brewers despite Cubs only being able to scratch out 1 run.  Very productive day!

Brewers will get through the Pirates series without having to face Taillon, lucky for them.  Still, they'll see Trevor Williams tomorrow, and he's very good too.  Would be kind of great if they'd lose another one.
Title: Re: Wild Card Chase
Post by: Deeg on September 15, 2018, 10:09:23 pm
I suspect it’s probably going to take 8-6 or 9-5 for the Cubs to win the division. I expect the Brewers to lose 2 or 3 times the rest of the way.

Brewers hit a couple of HR's to lead off the 9th, but then go down 1-2-3.  Cubs lose no ground, Brewers lose a day of opportunity.

Who are the Tigers announcers? Their color guy sounds like a guy who is calling game 160 out of 162 in a 95 loss season. They are not great.

But the Tigers have runners on the corners with 1 out in the first.

James McCann single, 3-0.

These have mostly just been softly hit rollers, but that's fine.

It's possible, if the Cubs win the division and the Brewers the WC game, that the Cubs will have spent over a month in their own beds by the end of the NLDS.  They commute for Milwaukee games, don't they?
Title: Re: Wild Card Chase
Post by: brjones on September 28, 2018, 07:27:02 pm
K, 2 outs.

Only two balls have been hit harder than 73 mph, and one of them was a 107.8 mph grounder by Candelario which turned into an out.
Title: Re: Wild Card Chase
Post by: brjones on September 28, 2018, 07:27:48 pm
Groundout, inning over.

Still, 3-0 after half an inning is better than anything I would've reasonably hoped for.

Title: Re: Wild Card Chase
Post by: brjones on September 28, 2018, 08:31:12 pm
Santana singles, 5-3.

Well, this game was fun for about 10-15 minutes, but the Tigers really have no chance in this series unless a Brewers pitcher just has nothing.
Title: Re: Wild Card Chase
Post by: brjones on September 28, 2018, 08:41:40 pm
Coming into tonight, Yelich was hitting .469/.595/1.031 in his last 9 games. He has a homer and two walks tonight, so his 1.626 OPS over that time has actually gone up.

Soria ends the threat.

Hader blew a game earlier this week against the Cardinals, then the Brewers immediately came back. He blew that game where Rizzo hit the homer off of him, then the Brewers immediately came back. Hopefully the Tigers can do better this inning than the Cardinals or Cubs did.

This catch ended up as a home run for Braun instead. The way things have gone for the Brewers this year, they're probably winning the World Series.

Dodgers win 10-6, eliminating the Cardinals.  Let's hope the Cards aren't loose and relaxed tomorrow, because we need it a lot more than they do.

Cardinals are officially done.

Meanwhile, Norris looks really impressive through 2 for the Tigers. He's on a 90 pitch count, though, so he's probably not going more than 6 innings.

Candelario HBP in the knee leading off the third.

GOODRUM! 2 run triple, 3-0. Still only 1 out in the inning.

Miley hasn't given up more than 3 ER in any start this year, so this would be the first time if the Tigers could get this run in.
Title: Re: Wild Card Chase

2 out infield single for Cain in the 3rd, then Yelich homers again. 3-2. It's getting to the point where you should just walk him every time.

Counsell pinch hit for Miley earlier in the inning, so he's going with the bullpen for 6 innings tonight.

What Yelich has done in the last week or two has to have given him an edge in the MVP voting.

The idea that anyone but DeGrom or Yelich is MVP is absurd.

An edge? No, what he's done in the last couple of weeks has made the MVP vote unanimous.

DeGrom has been more valuable to the Mets than Javier Baez has been to the Cubs?  I don't think so.
Title: Re: Wild Card Chase

so it looks like the Cardinals won't be playing for anything tomorrow.

You don't think they'd like preventing the Cubs from winning the division and forcing them into a 1-game scenario?
Title: Re: Wild Card Chase

deGrom has been by far the most valuable player in the league by WAR, even over Yelich. The only reason he's not going to win the MVP is that pitchers don't win the award unless it's just a really down year for position players.

I think that means a lot more to fans than it does to the players on the field.

I also think it's going to be difficult for them to get up to play their best tomorrow after the disappointment today.

Moustakas with a 1 out single to put runners on first and third with 1 out. Tigers lead is about to be gone.

Guess we'll have an idea based on what lineup Shildt puts out there. I'm betting it's nearly all the regulars.

Schoop double, tie game. Norris looked great in the first two innings, but has been awful the last two.

I guess getting any help from the Tigers was a pipe dream.

Kratz two run single.

I think every hit this inning has been on a 2 strike count.

Groundout ends the inning.

Yelich due leading off, so there's about a 75% chance it'll be back to a 2 run deficit after 1 batter.

Castellanos flies to the wall, nice play by Yelich. That looked like it was going to be an 8-5 game for a second.

Bottom of the Brewers lineup due, hopefully the Tigers can hold them for at least an inning.

Yelich is leading the league in batting average, tied for the lead in HR, and two off the lead in RBI. Really shows how much baseball analytics have changed that the triple crown hasn't really even been mentioned this year.

No more runs score in the 7th. But even if the Tigers rally at this point, Yelich will just hit another homer and win it in the 8th or 9th.

5 game lead on September 2, and they lose 4 of 6 to the Brewers to let them stick around.

95.1% chance to win the division outright on September 18, and now it's a coin flip at best.

They choked.

In 1969, the Cubs lost to the Mets, not because they choked, but because the Mets played incredible baseball at the end of the season.  The same situation exists today.  If the Cubs do not win the division, it will be because the Brewers became incredibly hot at the proper time, not that the Cubs choked.
Title: Re: Wild Card Chase
Post by: Deeg on September 30, 2018, 05:12:31 pm
In ‘69 the Cubs were under .500 after the break and 8-17 in September - they choked. Doesn’t mean the Mets weren’t great - the two are not mutually exclusive.
Title: Re: Wild Card Chase

The cubs are going to win 95 games.  They aren’t in the wild card chase.

This post is prima facie evidence that the Cubs didn't choke.  They did what they were on pace to do -- the Brewers just played even better.

Now let's go get that 96th win tomorrow!

Actually Cubs are in good shape.  They only need to win one out of the next two to get into the NL final four.  Winning tomorrow means no need to even play the next one.

In a one game playoff it doesn't matter if the game is at Wrigley, the moon, or hell.  You gotta win it.

And remember that scrub team that the Reds put on the field against us that final game?  Kicked our ass.
