Honestly the more I think about that Boyd signing, the more I really hate it.  Just what kind of upside are we really chasing with Boyd?  Maybe average 3rd, above average 4th starter type?  That's the upside of it!  The downside is a guy who can't stay healthy and we wind up having to use some fill-in from Iowa anyway.  Just because he flashed in a small sample size at the end of the season isn't enough to ignore a long injury history and mediocre, HR factory in Detroit results when he's managed to stay healthy.

Stuff like this reeks more of Ed Lynch than Theo Epstein.  Like br said, use that $14-15 million or whatever he's getting this year plus whatever other "spread it around" short term veterans he has in mind and take that money and spend it on someone actually good.

I’d say they’re seated right where they need to be if you read the sign on the wall…

Of course he pardoned his son.  Who wouldn’t.

The problem I have is he continuously lied about it then blamed his own DOJ.

What a wuss.

The Yankees spiked a trade of Flaherty due to health concerns....

Didn't know that.  Yeah, that changes his equation.  Heh heh, knowing Hoyer, maybe that opens him a little bit?  If others are scared off long-term deals due to health, then maybe short-term Hoyer might be able to dabble?

And even when he was able to hold up for a full season, the guy is a HR allowed factory.

Also to emphasize, he was a HR allowed factory pitching in Detroit of all places.

So Hoyer isn't even going to talk to Juan Soto, but he'll flush $30 million down the toilet on a guy whose biggest workload in the last five years was 78 1/3 IP in 2021.

Maybe it'll work out better than other recent two year deals like those Hoyer gave to Trey Mancini, Tucker Barnhart, and Drew Smyly.

Yeah that's my thoughts on it.  What in Boyd's profile makes anyone think he'd be able to hold up for a full season of starting?  And even when he was able to hold up for a full season, the guy is a HR allowed factory.  The Cubs love these kinds of short term upside plays, but sheesh.  The chances of him being worth $13 million in either season don't seem especially great.
