Time will tell how it works out. But I assume that Baez+Zych will sign.
And I'm assuming that they're going to do what it takes to get both Maples and Dunston.
I think this will be beyond question the most aggressive draft ever, hands down, no question, not even close.
I use the word "aggressive" intentionally. There's never been a draft anything like this by the cubs.
I think drafts can be judged at several levels. How exciting it seemed at the time. And how well it turned out. This has to be exceptional in terms of how exciting it seems at the time. It will take years to find out whether it works out.
There are three other drafts I thought were super exciting at the time.
1. Corey-Kelton-Goldbach. That was really exciting at the time, and remained super exciting-looking during the ensuing year. Choi besides made it seem even more exciting.
2. Prior-Sisco. That was basically it, with Theriot coming in round 3. But obviously Prior was unmatched, and then to spend on Sisco who seemed unlimited in potential as well, and expensive, that was exciting. Ryu besides made it more exciting yet.
3. Brownlie-Hagerty-Blasco-Clanton-Dopirak-Jones-Petrick-Hill-Craig. At the time that seemed incredibly exciting, and the early returns on so many of them were so encouraging. Each one started really good except Clanton and Hill, who had his day later. Spending on Brownlie on top of the rest, it wasn't super super-slot like this year, but with so many high picks, who needed to overslot? And Brownlie and Blasco were both overslot, significantly for Brownlie.
Obviously those exciting-at-time drafts all flubbed. And obviously it's easier to look "aggressive" by superslotting then just spending a bundle when you've got a Prior or when you've got 5 compensation picks.
But I think this is really exciting, and I'm looking forward to who they all end up bringing in. It's got a chance to be a great class, and to change everything.
