I think that's been some of their motivation in changing up the roster-getting much younger. Not a bad idea really....but we don't want to get rid of too much experience.

Rolle did nothing for us with his experience and Mundy before that.  I stated before that Slauson was a solid pro.  A player that you could say I am glad he is a Bear.  Forte, the same.  Forte was actually better at his position.  I have to agree that it looks like Pace is building this team through the draft. And experience got us, sub 500 records the last three years.

I don't know that this plan will work, or that the players chosen can execute the plan.  But the results are in on how it worked out before.

I guess if you look ahead and think about our realistic chances of making any real  noise in the playoffs, we are still a year away. Getting younger and getting those guys experience makes sense if you are building for a run next year. Yes, we can be competitive thus year, we were competitive next year but it seems to me that Pace is building a team that does more than just sniff the playoffs.

I have to disagree.  I have no problem with the experience and contributions of Forte, Bennett, Marshall, and Slauson.  Those guys were pro-bowl quality and Slauson was probably top 20-30% at his position.

What got us to sub .500 was a total failure of our GMs to draft quality players.  Into 2015, Fuller, McClellan, Jones and Ferguson were the only starters drafted by Angelo/Emery.  This year I expect only one of those guys to be starting.

Offensively, we had Forte, Jefferies, Leno and Long.  So that's 3 on offense to go with 1 on defense that are starters from before Pace.

I am just saying that our team as it was constructed was floundering.  The stars we had were either in the final quarter of their careers or malcontents or not good for team chemistry.  Of the players released, Slauson is the biggest head scratcher as lineman tend to play longer into their 30s than skill position players.  But this could also about team leadership as I posted earlier.  I am not sure I would place Saluson in the top 30%, but he was solid.

I can't comment on team chemistry issues with Marshall and Bennett - I just see what happens between the lines and I had no issues there.  But I can understand that the players have to conform to the new coach's philosophy and apparently Fox didn't appreciate eccentric behavior.

As for Slauson's ranking among other guards:

Slauson was owed just under $3 million this season. The move is surprising after Slauson finished No. 18 in Pro Football Focus' 2015 guard ratings, with a top-ten rank in pass protection. He allowed one sack in 16 starts, and just turned 30 in February. While the Bears are moving on with second-round pick Cody Whitehair at left guard, a good guard just hit the free agent market.

I've heard that his visiting San Diego and Buffalo who are considering moving to right tackle (someone better measure his arms).

Exactly. Its hard to imagine the playoffs (10-6) with a bunch of rookies and 2nd year players. Its too easy to get caught up in upside after the draft when in reality the players haven't even dressed for a game. They haven't competed against NFL players or even been in an NFL game. Its like preseason wins. They don't count in the standings.

We may be a year away we may be 2 years away...or we could be 4 months away.

How many teams think they've improved after a year of free agency and the draft?  32   How many teams think they have a shot at the playoffs?  32

And you can never count on strength of schedule or rookies in predicting success of a team in a particular season.

That's why I don't make predictions on win/loss.

The Bears signed eight undrafted free agents on Friday.

The eight are tight end Joe Sommers (Wisconsin-Oshkosh), tight end Ben Braunecker (Harvard), center Dan Bucholz (Duquesne), cornerback Taveze Calhoun (Mississippi State), linebacker Don Cherry (Villanova), wide receiver Derek Keaton (Georgia Southern), offensive tackle John Kling (Buffalo) and linebacker Roy Robertson-Harris (UTEP).

The Bears will have those players and a group of tryout players in for a rookie minicamp May 13-15.

The Chicago Bears announced a pair of minor roster moves Thursday morning, finalizing the signing of undrafted rookie offensive lineman Adrian Bellard and waiving defensive back Anthony Jefferson.

The move comes a day before the team will begin its on-field work at Halas Hall for its three-day rookie minicamp.

Bellard played his college ball at Texas State and started 36 consecutive games for the Bobcats. At 6-foot-5 and 315 pounds, Bellard is best fit to play offensive tackle but has the ability to play guard as well.

TE position solved!

It was just one of those numerous roster-shufflings that occur from about this time of year on through the end of training camp. Or was it? Or was it a move that the Bears hope will re-create some very distinguished history for themselves?

Greg Scruggs, a defensive lineman who signed with the Bears last Dec. 30 after being waived by the Seattle Seahawks, was good enough to post three solo tackles and earn a sack in a Week 17 loss to the Detroit Lions. The Bears now appear convinced that he’s enough of an athlete to move him to tight end, complete with a number change from 90 to 87.

Scruggs did play a little tight end at Louisville on a fill-in basis and the Bears have been looking for help at the position ever since dealing away Martellus Bennett.

They made a play for New Orleans Saints tight end Josh Hill but the Saints matched the Bears’ offer sheet to the restricted free agent. They’d hoped to use a draft choice on Hunter Henry from Arkansas but were beaten to him by the San Diego Chargers, who selected Henry six picks before the Bears’ second-round selection.

The Bears also used two of their 10 UDFA signings on tight ends (Ben Braunecker from Harvard, Joe Sommers from Wisconsin-Oshkosh). Now comes Scruggs.

Converting defensive linemen to offense has worked very, very well for the Bears. Mark Bortz had been a defensive tackle at Iowa when the Bears used an eighth-round pick in the 1983 draft to land him, with the intention of moving him to offense. Bortz became a fixture on the Bears offensive line of the 1980's and was twice selected to NFC Pro Bowl squads.

James “Big Cat” Williams arrived in 1991 as an undrafted defensive tackle out of Cheney State. He was shifted to offensive tackle part time in 1992, then moved permanently to that side of the football by then-coach Tony Wise. Williams was a Pro Bowl alternate in 1998 and voted to the team in 2001.

For that matter, Pro Bowl guard Kyle Long was a defensive end at Saddleback (Cal.) Community College before moving to offense.
