The 36-year old probably won't be a long-term solution to the struggling Cubs, but he does provide experience to their bullpen.
Lim has over 100 wins and almost 300-saves combined in the Korean and Japanese Leagues and was a pivotal part of Korea's silver medal team at the 2009 World Baseball Classic.
He was the 6th highest paid player in Japan last year earning $450,000.

Apparently, he recently had TJ, so he won't be a factor until 2014.

There is a you tube video of him.  He throws sidearm with a 93-96 fastball that tops out at 99.  It is nicknamed a serpent fastball because of the movement.

The Cubs' bullpen strategy this offseason has been kind of interesting.  All three guys they've signed/targeted have been older (Fujikawa is 32; Lim and Grilli are 36), and don't have the track record to demand a real long term deal.  There was also some talk that they might be interested in Mike Adams, I think.  It's a small sample of relievers...but I wonder if they feel like typical aging curves don't really apply to relievers, and other teams overlook value signings because they're expecting a drop off like you see from starting pitchers.  Maybe age is the new market inefficiency in the bullpen.

Also, it doesn't really feel like it, but the Cubs have been one of the more active teams this offseason.  They've brought in Baker, Feldman, Fujikawa, Navarro, Schierholtz, and now Lim.  They've also brought back Stewart and Camp.  They haven't made the headline-grabbing moves like the Blue Jays and Dodgers (and certainly won't see as much improvement as those teams)...but they've turned over roster spots just as aggressively.  They really have done a good job adding the secondary pieces this offseason...now if they could just find a couple significant players (a mid-rotation starter, or a surprise upgrade at 3B/2B/LF/RF/CF), this could end up being a surprisingly respectable non-contending team.

Also, this is a split deal...so it's essentially a minor league contract with money guaranteed if he makes the team at some point.  That means they don't have to clear a roster spot for him.

I think even without significant additions, this will be a respectable non-contending team.  At a rate of 75 - 80 wins, until the end of July.  Then it all depends upon how much of the team they trade away.

Part of me is holding out a little hope that Michael Bourn might settle for a three year deal and we can make a play for him.  If we had someone like Bourn, we'd have one of the strongest defensive teams in baseball, and a team with good pitching and defense could surprise some people.

I think Bourn is one vet who would make a lot of sense for where we are right now, but obviously we don't need to be giving him a big $100 million or 5 or 6 year contract.

Even if it's not Bourn, I wonder how hard the Cubs are working to get a true CF.  Would Coco Crisp be a significant upgrade?  Or Alejandro De Aza, if the White Sox are truly open to moving him? 

It seems like there is significant interest in DeJesus too.  There was a rumor about the Mariners the other day.  He'd fit well going back to the Royals.  The Braves are looking for a leadoff-type hitter to play LF.  So it might even be a case where the Cubs don't really need to truly upgrade if they can just get more for DeJesus than they give up for someone like Crisp.

Bourn would cost Cubs its 2nd round pick---a pretty high pick with the reduction of all those sandwich picks---because Braves made him a qualifying offer.  Seems unlikely that Theo would give up that pick unless he thinks he can flip Bourn for more value in a year or so.

Forgot about that.  Yeah we don't need to be doing that either.
