Sounds like better than 50-50 chance Sanchez will end up with the Tigers, though who knows?  One thing I believe is true: Theo/Jed will not make a decision based on panic.  They will have established what they believe Sanchez' value is to the Cubs and will not go above that, whatever the Tigers do.  Personally, I hope the Cubs get Sanchez, but I'm not very hopeful.

Theo and company may be really smart guys, but they suck at negotiations.  May end up being a good thing though.  I'm not sure Sanchez is the guy we should spend that much money on right now.

Also, if I'm Theo and they thought they had a deal, I would immediately go public and tell everyone that we have pulled our offer from the table.  Then he can go back to the Tigers for whatever their last offer was.  That will be the last time the Cubs get used for leverage.

At some point the "We're a bad team that shouldn't spend money to get better" reasoning begins to wear a little thin.  In the absence of any compelling reason why we should be worried about spending a little, I remain unmoved by concerns about the Sanchez offer.

The more I look at his numbers, the more excited I get about a potential Sanchez acquisition. His BB rate is systematically dropping, while his strike rate and velocity are rising. He has also acheived his recent numbers in front of below average to awful defenses. 5/75 would be awesome. I'd be happy to give him a vesting team option year based on IP, too. 200 IP in the last year of his contract, or 350 over the previous two years.

yeah, i thought the same thing about the velocity.  It's not often you can sign a pitcher who has reached free agency, and his fastball velocity his free agent year is higher than his career average, if only by a tick.  Hopefully moving to a smaller park won't jump his hr rate too much.

Also, I'd be VERY interested in a deal for Bourjos. The Angels are a team without much leverage as it's clear he is not in their starting plans. Meanwhile most of the CF market has dried up with all the CF trades and signings. Finally, Bourjos underperformed in limited AB's last year. Don't know how much he'd cost, but I don't think there will be a better time to buy.

Wow, interesting stuff tonight.  I'm with you, Ron, this probably won't work and Detroit will probably end up paying the match.  (Although I can't imagine they are sitting great budget-wise, are they?) 

But the sense that there is another agent engaged, combined with the reported $75/5 offer, suggests that the cubs are pretty serious about adding a starter involving serious money, perhaps higher than the  Maholm/Baker/Feldman class. 

So maybe they'll either end up signing Sanchez or somebody else interesting?

Maybe. Or maybe the agent represents someone who is only attractive if they can't get Sanchez, a fall back who is considerably inferior to Sanchez.  Who knows?
