And I wasn't responding to your post.  I was responding to brjones' post.  Paying it before the end of 2012 makes no difference as far as which year's payroll budget is charged.

Last year was his 8th season in AAA, and unfortunately he is not even really a 4A player.   The last two years he has been a good AAA player, but not great: avg of .280/24HR/82 RBI/.362 OBP.  At 30 years old tomorrow, he's not likely to get better.

Nelson is the kind of player who likely will help the Iowa club, and certainly there is value in having your minor league prospects playing in a compet-itive environment where they are in ballgame and exposed to other players who play the game right and reasonably well, even if not well enough to ever contribute at the major league level, but if Nelson sees any time in a major league uniform for the Cubs, the 2013 season (or beyond) is going to be uglier than anyone here imagines.

As the roster sits right now, who is the backup 1Bman if Rizzo has to go on the 15 day DL? 60 day?

Other than Rizzo, Welington Castillo is the only member of the likely 25-man roster to have ever played a major league inning at first base.

He had no chances.

And those are good reasons to get someone some practice and innings at firstbase in spring training, or even to acquire a bench player who has experience at first, perhaps even an old vet with enough experience there to give Rizzo a few pointers on the position.

Those are NOT reasons to think of Nelson as an option.

Why do you keep bringing up Nelson? He's Iowa's 1Bman...nothing more.

I'd prefer Stewart at 1B and Valbuena at 3B if something happened to Rizzo, personally...

Every time I have mentioned Nelson it has been in response to your posts.

If he is indeed Iowa's 1Bman and nothing more (and I agree with that), then why mention his signing here?

Because he was signed.

And if he is having the kind of year he had last year, and Rizzo gets hurt and goes on the DL, I suspect that he would be called up and given the chance to fill in.  Probably won't do very well, but he is still the most likely replacement at this point, in my opinion.

Circumstances can change.  If Stewart is back to his form of a couple of years ago, they might well put him at first, and put Valbuena at third.  But if both Stewart and Valbuena is struggling, as is quite possible, Nelson is probably the guy.
