Deer has spent most of the last decade working as a roving hitting instructor for the Padres, working with Anthony Rizzo in 2011. He was considered a boom-or-bust guy as a hitter, setting an American League record with 196 strikeouts in 1987 (it stood until 2008). He had 140-plus strikeouts in seven seasons but walked often enough to raise his career batting average by 102 points. He finished with a slash line of .220/.324/.442 over 11 seasons.
