Shawn Camp signed, 1 year $1.35 million with $200K in performance bonuses.

Over the last three years, Camp has compiled a 1.3 fWAR.  Over the past three years, Jeremy Affeldt has compiled an identical 1.3 WAR.  Camp signed for 1 year, $1.35 million; Affeldt signed for 3 years, $18.5 million.  Nice job, Cubs front office.

Affeldt is a lefty who does well against both LH and RH hitters (career OPS allowed -- .742 against RH hitters and .701 against LH; Camp a righty, with splits showing you might not want to leave him in for a full inning if a lefty is hitting -- .724/.874.

Affeldt turned 33 in June; Camp turned 37 last week.

Affeldt has had an ERA+ of 130 of better in 5 of the last 6 years, including 2 of the last three, his ERA+ in 2012 about the same as 4 of the last 6 years, and with the one down year he had an oblique strain.  Camp has only had one season with an ERA+ as high as 130, and in 3 of the last 5 seasons, including both of the last two he has had an ERA+ between 100 and 110.

In short, Affeldt is an apple, and Camp is an orange.

Their differences may not warrant as much difference as is seen in what they signed for, but the two guys are not close to being the same relief pitchers.

Probably trying to figure out a last minute trade so they don't have to DFA anyone they want to keep.

The trade for Loux is a little surprising.  I know there were health concerns when he was drafted, but he's been healthy since he signed with the Rangers.  And pretty effective too.  I know Brigham is kind of an under-the-radar back end starting prospect, but he was hurt at the end of the year.  Seems like the Cubs came out better with Loux.
