dave, hadn't Jackson had been sent back home after several weeks in Arizona?

Is he back there now after some time off?

The non-tender deadline is tonight at midnight.  You'd expect something to happen with Ian Stewart today (either an agreement on a contract that is cheaper than what he'd get through arbitration, or a non-tender) because it's pretty doubtful he'd get ~$2.5 million on the open market.

I don't know, maybe they're trying to work up to the deadline to get him to sign for something like $1-$1.5 million.  Or maybe they're working on a trade for third base, but want to wait as long as possible to make sure the deal goes through.

Either that, or they think that his wrist isn't worth a 2 million dollar gamble.

Or, of course, it could be a combination of both, and other factors we are ignorant of.

The fact that Stewart is still working out with Cubs trainers and coaches, rehabbing at the team's Arizona facilities indicates the Theocracy is still considering him.

And from Stewart's perspective, he should realize that Chicago would give him a far stronger opportunity for early season playing time than most teams, and that a one year deal with the Cubs and a return to health and performance would make it much lore likely for him to end up in the post-season than signing with many other teams would, since health and performance would mean a mid-season to a contender and a great chance for a nice multi-year contract a year from now.

A couple non-tenders?  The arb eligible players on the roster are Garza, Samardzija, Russell, Valbuena, and Stewart.  If there are two non-tenders, then you have to assume that Stewart is one of them.  But who is the other?  I guess Valbuena is the obvious one...but we've heard nothing but how the Cubs are likely to keep him (and really, I don't think there's a more cost effective mutli-position infield backup on the market).  But I guess Valbuena has to be it--Russell is cheap and the Cubs don't have many relief pitchers.   Samardzija is the third most important player on the 40 man right now behind Castro and Rizzo.  And unless Garza is going to have to have TJ and they've kept it quiet, he's not getting non-tendered.

Maybe Hoyer just misspoke.  But if he didn't, it sounds likely that they'll go outside the organization for next year's third baseman.
