I do think that it's likely that Marmol's value in a trade is likely to be very underestimated here (assuming the Cubs pick up a healthy chunk of his salary).  The conventional wisdom is that he's been bad the last two seasons.  But when Marmol returned from his demotion and started using his fastball, he had 19 consecutive saves.  Yeah, he's more erratic with the strike zone than you'd like, but he's still capable of being pretty unhittable.

Dave, I think you underestimate Marmol's trading chip status.  Surely he isn't where he was a couple years ago, and he isn't worth the money they're paying him, but "to pay all of his salary" doesn't compute.  In that case, keep him and use him for setup.  He'd be better than, say, Coleman.

I think that they should pay all his salary because they would then get a better prospect back.  I do not underestimate his value.  He was very good the last half of the season, after they talked him into using his fast ball, and if the Cubs keep him, I think he will be better than Fujikawa.  But with the signing of Fujikawa, he is a prime trade bait at this time.

Agree that if the Cubs chip in $8 plus Marmol, you could get a pretty good value right now.  Without the salary, a number of teams would like to add a guy like that to their stable.  I'd think you could get a Villanueva type prospect for him.

The other issue is what he wants.  Hendry gave him no-trade; would he allow a trade to a contender who really wants him as a setup guy, not a closer?  Or will he spike any deal in which he isn't given the close job?  I just don't think many contenders will want to really hitch their wagon to a closer as wild as Marmol is.

I expect he'll not be traded, and the season will play out, and all values will evolve as the season progresses.  But if he gets traded as a two-month rental at the end, you don't usually make a killing on those.

Can't believe Hendry couldn't have talked ownership into over slotting in the draft for Weiters or whomever...ridiculous.

If the Leader of the operation can't persuade the owner to spend a relatively amount, he hasn't made a good business case...almost certainly the case with Hendry, who always was intent on signing the next FA and never prioritized building the foundation.

From the end of 2006 until the time the Ricketts bought the team, Cub ownership was wanting to sell the team.  They did not give a damb about the foundation of the organization.

They simply wanted to put lipstick on the pig.

Moves that might help the team win immediately, even if expensive, were fine.  Moves to help with the foundation, even if they had been relatively inexpensive, were not.

Persuasion was not an issue in the decisions, particularly when he was not hired to help persuade the owners what to do or how much money to spend.  Thinking it was some deficiency on Hendry's part to have been unable to persuade ownership to sink money into the foundation, when the ownership had no intention of holding onto the team long enough to ever see any return from that investment, misses not only what was happening, but also the goals of ownership, and the role of the GM.

According to the report I saw, Marmol is able to limit his trading options by listing 5 teams  (to which he could not be traded, I believe).  That may or may not be correct.

Quote from: Buster Olney
Chicago Cubs: Now that they've signed closer Kyuji Fujikawa, they can continue to shop Carlos Marmol, who is owed $9.8 million for 2013, the last year of his multiyear deal. Alfonso Soriano is a player they have been trying to move for months -- and they're willing to pay off the majority of the $36 million he is owed over the next two seasons. However, Soriano has a full no-trade clause and he has made it apparent that he will wield it unless he gets to a desired destination; he rejected a chance to go to the San Francisco Giants last year.

So where could he go? He told me last season that there are few places to which he would accept a trade.

Yeah, he could have joined Theriot in getting a ring.

That's assuming they still would have won it with Soriano there.

It doesn't sound like DeRosa is totally ready to settle for a broadcasting career yet.

How about a dual role?

He announces any game he doesn't start, but suits up even in the broadcast booth so he can come down to take the field.... or he even serve as color commentator from the dugout... or put a wireless mike on him and let him provide analysis from the field....

Could be pretty interesting....

If we're just looking for a stopgap at third, what's wrong with DeRosa?  It's not like we're planning on the WS.

DeRosa has a total of 302 PA over the past three seasons.  He's done as anything approaching an everyday guy.  Or even a part time/platoon guy.

So give some time to Valbuena.

What I'm saying is, what difference does it make?  Hell, leave the base open.

Hell, leave the base open.

They already do that with left handed pull hitters.
