Actually, Deshaies sounds like a great hire. Glad the Cubs didn't feel like they had to settle for an ex-Cub and actually went out to hire the best broadcaster available.

Craig you don't miss on the World Series for 100 years without trying really hard to be bad. I think the Cubs will be somewhat respectable until the trading deadline, and then you'll see slightly better versions of the crap guys. With Rizzo, Castro, Samardijzia, a healthy Garza it will be difficult to be #1 pick worthy.

Kasper is good. That says a lot, I think, that he wanted Deshaies. Deshaies sounds a whole lot preferable to Sutcliffe or Grace, that's for sure.

Now lets get him some good players to talk about. I have to imagine that for an announcer, as for a player, being associated with a Cubs team that goes to a world series, and wins it, would be awfully special.

For a while, there have been suggestions that the Cubs could end up getting a corner OF instead of a CF this winter. Now there is at least one report/tweet that DeJesus will be the CF to open next season, and the Cubs will focus on getting a RF instead of a CF.

If the Cubs believe that Jackson can be ready sometime in 2013, that would make some sense. If the Cubs do manage to trade Soriano for some decent value, having a corner option would be helpful. Also, DeJesus will be a free agent after next season.

I keep reading and hearing about the Indians who are available...I've got to say, if the Cubs could find a few players that they want, they seem to be a perfect fit. Choo has one year left and is a Boras client, so he can't have a ton of trade value. But he could possibly be the Cubs' best hitter. And Asdrubal Cabrera's defense has slipped a little the last couple of years, so a move to third base might be in his future...and his defense would probably be really good over there. He'll play next season at 27 years old, so he's young enough that the Cubs could keep him around for a while (but his current contract only has 2 more years, which will limit his value).

I believe Bruce Levine has said multiple times that the Indians do like some of the Cubs prospects. So I just wonder if there is a deal based around young but replaceable major league guys with value (Wood, Barney, Clevenger) and Hendry-era prospects that aren't valued as much by the new front office (Jackson, Lake, Szczur, maybe McNutt or Vitters) to get both of them. Probably not...someone probably would want Cabrera enough as a SS to give up a borderline top prospect for him.

I believe the Cubs hold a 2014 option on DeJesus.

JR, I suspect that there was a specific, and most likely perfectly valid, reason for that decision, but that the position of traveling secretary is simply not one likely to result in much digging into the matter.
