The Cubs have claimed another castoff pitcher.  This time it's Sandy Rosario from Boston.  He's had three cups of coffee with the Marlins the last three seasons.

Cubs have claimed RHP Sandy Rosario off waivers from the Red Sox.   Not much major league experience, but here are his minor league numbers:

Isn't the roster already full?  Seems like there will have to be tinkering soon to fit everyone on there.

Rosario might actually be a halfway interesting arm.  He only had 5 BB in 31 IP in Triple-A last season and 17 BB  in 92 IP in 2010 (along with 125 K's).

Mid 90's with that kind of control seems interesting.

Rosario has had a really interesting offseason, by the way.

October 17 – Claimed off waivers by the Red Sox.
November 20 – Designated for assignment by Red Sox.
November 26 – Rosario clears waivers and re-signs with Red Sox on minor league deal.
November 28 – Rosario traded to the A’s and placed on their 40 man.
November 30 – Designated for assignment by A’s.
December 10 – Claimed off waivers by Red Sox again.
December 12 – Claimed off waivers by Cubs.

Looks to me like the 40 man roster was at 39 before claiming Rosario.

Apparently, Schierholtz and Stewart aren't officially on the roster right now.  Seems like they'd have to be added soon.

Good point.  Maybe the next to go is someone like Chris Rusin, Lendy Castillo, Gerardo Concepcion, etc.?

Because they were added to an MLB Reserve List (40-man roster) after August 15th, Trey McNutt, Chris Rusin, Christian Villanueva, Logan Watkins, and Rob Whitenack have Draft Excluded Status, and thus cannot be optioned or sent outright to the minors until 20 days prior to 2013 MLB Opening Day.

Barring trades, two currently-rostered players will have to be removed to make room for Schierholtz and Stewart. My nominees are Campana and Rosario. Nobody in the AL claimed Rosario, so the Astros presumably passed on him. Then send him to Iowa and invite him to ST.

7 innings is not a particularly large sample size.

In 25 minor league relief games/26 innings last year in AAA, he had a 1.04 ERA and an .846 WHIP.

You don't see a lot of guys with that either.
