Well, that was disappointing.  But, that's life. I'm sure Theo & Jed are more frustrated than anyone here. Hand wringing is pointless - time to move on.

Well, it's nice to know that Bob Nightengale lets agents use him like this.  Now we can ignore anything he breaks until a more reliable source (like Rosenthal, or Gammons, or bigbird) runs with it.

I'm disappointed, but then again, I'm still not a big fan of giving out 5 year contracts to starting pitchers unless it's absolutely necessary.  Sanchez would have been a nice addition, but with where the Cubs are in the rebuilding process, it's not a move we absolutely needed to make either.  One less risky long term contract to worry about.

Nice job by Agent Gene Mato of manipulating the market.  I guess he earned his slice of the contract.

Yeah probably goes to show that even our top players don't know a whole lot more than we do when rumors like this go around.

It will be interesting to see what happens next. Part of what Kap said (who is about the best Cub source around, it seems) is that there was another FA waiting to hear from the Cubs based on the outcome of the Sanchez negotiations. Hopefully that's Jackson.

Well, hopefully Jackson won't drag anything out too far.  With Sanchez and Dempster off the board in the last 24 hours, you've got to think that the Jackson and Lohse dominoes could fall at any time.

With Sanchez back in Detroit (at such a high price too), I bet Porcello is gone by the time the season starts.  If the Cubs don't get Jackson, he'd be the next most interesting name to me.

Pretty much, if Kaplan hasn't confirmed it, it means it hasn't happened yet.

Cubs seem to be being played right now by some players to drive up another team's offer.  I don't think that's wise with this leadership team.  Together their memories will be long.

I'm not a fan of them until that signing would make a likely also ran into a probable playoff team, or better.  Sanchez would not have done that for 2013.  The only thing that would have made the signing possibly reasonable is that Sanchez should still have at least 2 or 3 strong seasons after the time when the Cubs likely would be in the mix for the playoffs.  Wouldn't have been a terrible signing.  Also not a terrible loss in not signing him.

The fact that the Cubs appear not to have increased their offer from $75M indicates the Theocracy also is not interested in overpaying anyone, but will instead make a rational determination as to a player's value to the Cubs, and not allow emotion to push them beyond that figure.

Garza had to have been happy to see the Cubs bidding on Sanchez, because it likely means more a bigger payday for him when his next contract is negotiated.
