Occam's Razor isn't always right, but in this case it seems pretty clear what the likely scenario is.  The agent clearly feels it doesn't matter if he pisses off Epstein, because if circumstances conspire to make one of his clients a good fit for the Cubs in future, he figures Epstein would be shooting himself in the foot by not bidding.  A calculated risk.

I'm pleased that Epstein was willing to go after Sanchez, even if we didn't get him - it tells me he has some grasp of just how bad things are, and how long it would take to try and build a contender without spending heavily in FA.  I don't like that we were used as leverage - I wish Theo had pulled the offer as soon as the agent leaked the story - but it is what it is.  What I don't want to see is the Cubs overbidding on Jackson - who isn't the pitcher Sanchez is - as an overreaction.

Occam's razor leads me to believe it was Sanchez's agent that was the leak.  He's the most logical and simplest answer, in my mind at least.

edit...apparently i wasn't the only one thinking that.  You beat me in saying it by 15 minutes tho...yes i really am that slow a typer.  not really...i just wrote out a bunch of scenario's and then deleted them cuz i didn't want to be arguing with Jes for 3 days about it.  I'd feel guilty about stealing Dave's most favoritestest hobby.

Interesting comment by ArizonaPhil as to why the Cubs put Stewart on the 40 man roster, but have not yet put Schierholtz there.

The Cubs might not take Stewart off the 40 man roster, and put him on waivers.  If no one claims him, they then outright him to Iowa and roster Schierholtz.

It isn't clear why he thinks no one would claim Stewart.

Cubs sign former Vanderbilt and Indians pitcher Jensen Lewis to a minor league contract.  I imagine Derek Johnson had some influence on this signing.

I imagine Hoyer's goal of collecting a good number of arms also had something to do with it....

Lewis actually had looked very good thru the 2010 season, with an ERA+ of 115 thru four seasons in the majors in 161 relief games at age 26.  Then he spent all of 2011 and 2012 in the minors, and didn't do well at all there in 2011, and decent but not great in 2012.  Any idea why he regressed so badly?  Injury?

I wondered that, too, jes.  He'd already been released prior to his nice-looking 2010 season.  So teams haven't seemed to find him as desirable as his 2010 numbers would suggest.

His FIP was 3.41 in 2010 and his xFIP was 4.53, so his numbers imply a lot of luck in 2010.  Fangraphs has his average fastball at 89.9 so unless he has some great breaking stuff he screams Casey Coleman to me.

The Indians sent him down to AAA in 2010 on July 20th after 25 innings with an ERA of 4.18 at the time, and then was called back up at the end of July and finished with an ERA of 2.97 in 36 total innings.

  Then after his release on June 24th, NO ONE signed the guy until Arizona did at the end of November in 2011.... which would make me think he may have had arm problems which either required minor surgery or which he (and Arizona) thought might be helped with rest.

2009 xFIP 4.37

And none of that changes that he is a RHP with an 89.9 mph fastball.  Hell Coleman averaged 90.7.  Absent a knock-out breaking pitch, assuming they are still dating it will be good for Des Moines....

Derek Johnson may have had influence in the signing, but it was probably more a case of doing a favor to an old friend in giving him another chance than a belief that Lewis has a good chance of being successful.

I am wondering if I should bother watching any games in 2013?  I think I might have watched a total of 8 innings of Cubs baseball last year. 

I know I watched more Nats baseball then that because I actually went to a couple of games.

I just couldn't bear to look at cubs baseball last year.
