Buster Olney says the Cubs have made "strong progress" on a 4 year, $52 million deal for Jackson, and that Jackson is "just about off the board".

I teased br a bit about his comment that it probably wouldn't take long for the Jackson decision to be reached.  It appears I may need to eat some crow on that.

If his decision is in favor of the Cubs, which Garza appears to believe, and the Cubs also sign Villanueva, that will be some winter, in terms of strengthening a pitifully weak rotation.  The Cubs will have a chance to be fun to watch, particularly if Brett Jackson and/or Ian Stewart get their acts together.

Garza and Jackson were teammates with Tampa in 2008, so I wonder if they stay in touch.

With Jackson and Villanueva (cross your fingers) possibly on board, I wonder how big of a play we'll continue to make for J.P. Howell.  I hate pigeonholing Travis Wood for full time relief already, but his lefty/righty splits are pretty distinct and would play well in a LH setup role.  Plus signing Howell does crowd out guys like Rosario that I think we'd like to keep. 
 
If the Cubs go into next season with the pitching staff as it would be constructed with Jackson and Villanueva, I'd be more than content with that.

So let's see...I think the Cubs' 40 man is still at 40.  They have to find spots for Schierholtz and Villanueva for sure, and may also need a spot for Jackson.  Seems like a good time for a trade.

Without upgrades to the offense, I still think the Cubs won't be that good.  I think what they are doing is building up enough depth so when the trade deadline hits you aren't seeing Belkin/Rusin/Geramino/Coleman.  Count me out on Bourn, but it seems like the Cubs are talking to him.

I think the Cubs are looking like a .500 team right now, with potential to do a little better if they catch lightning in a bottle on some guys like Schierholtz and Stewart and get some step up performances from Castro and Rizzo.

The pitching and defense on this team are very solid, if Jackson and Villanueva sign.  If we get lucky with a hitter or two and the right players improve this season, this could be a surprisingly good team.

Yeah, I think it's kind of funny to read some of these boards (PSD or NSBB, for example) and see that most of them are still assuming that it's going to be another mass sell-off at midseason, or that Garza is definitely gone as soon as someone makes an offer.  If the Jackson and Villanueva deals do go through, this rotation (and indirectly, this bullpen) are strong enough to keep this team around .500.  And if they're around .500 or a little better at the deadline, there isn't going to be a mass sell-off.

If we have to rely on sucking and losing 90 to 100 games every year for the next 3-4 years and getting high draft picks to get things turned around, then Theo isn't the brilliant baseball executive he's purported to be.

I imagine Theo probably would be the first to agree with me on that, too.
