Sveum says that Scott Baker should be able to pitch this season. Whoopee!

From ESPN.com:

Sveum expects to see right-handed pitcher Arodys Vizcaino when the Cubs get back to Chicago after wrapping up their six games away from Wrigley. Vizcaino is one of two Cubs right-handers working their way back from Tommy John surgery. Both he and Scott Baker are on the 60-day disabled list.

Sveum couldn’t speculate on Baker’s progress.

“He’s long tossing right now,” Sveum said. “We’ll have to wait to see how his first mound sessions go, but I think he should be able to get back this year. There’s a chance we could see him in August. Vizcaino, hopefully, sooner.”

While that looks like good news for the Cubs long term, some of the folks who have their sights on the very short horizon of the 2013 season and still want to see the team winning might not be too happy with it.

Both of them will likely be in the rotation before the end of the year, meaning a couple of other starters will likely need to be removed from the rotation.  And pitchers returning from Tommy John surgery tend need half a season or work their walk back and regain command.... meaning the last couple of months of this season, with those two in the rotation, could be ugly.

Jackson's contract given his performance is not likely to be moved because the Cubs could not get much of value for him.  Smardj is one the team will likely hold onto long term.  The best two of Garza, Wood or Feldman (if they all remain healthy) will likely be traded to a contender willing to give up prospects.

2013:  72-2/3 IP, 52 H, 24 BB, 80 K, .196 BAA

2012:  73-1/3 IP, 56 H, 19 BB, 80 K, .210 BAA



Total in those 22 starts:

2.71 ERA, 1.03 WHIP

146 IP, 108 H, 43 BB, 160 K, .203 BAA (108-532)

Well given that he wasn't ready to go a year after Tommy John, that's not surprising news at all. 

The trade was still a worthy one to make, but given his injury history, we probably should have had more of a feeling that we were acquiring an Angel Guzman type lottery ticket instead of someone who was almost guaranteed to return to bring an elite pitching prospect.  The Braves definitely knew their guy better than the people criticizing them for the trade.

I still don't think his injury history was that big a deal.  He had never had any arm problems except for his elbow.  He got that fixed.  85%-90% of the time, pitchers in his situation come back fine.

It is pretty amazing that as successful as TJ surgery has become, the Cubs have managed to hit on three in the last year--Vizcaino, Baker, and Whitenack--who had significant complications.  Maybe Vizcaino and Baker will eventually get all the way back, but it's unlikely that either has any kind of impact this year.  Typical Cubs luck.

I haven't seen any results on Fujikawa's MRI.  If it were just another strain it seems they would have announced it. They could be looking at other options.

There were some tweet earlier that the MRI results would be available tomorrow.  He might be ok.

I agree, though...TJ is probably inevitable even if he is able to rehab and get back in a few games in June and July.

Marmol?  Dolis??  No Russell?!?!  Limiting Villanueva to one inning?  Sveum is laughably bad at managing a bullpen.

By the way, 0 K's in 5 IP for Dolis in the majors so far.  He's also coming off a 5.40 ERA and 11:7 K to BB in Iowa.

I'm just not seeing it with Dolis so far.  In most other organizations, he's either still in Triple-A or pitching no pressure middle or long relief.  With the Cubs, Sveum actually had him closing for part of last year (when he was clearly overmatched), and he's now talking him up as an 8th inning guy.

I guess we'll see how it goes.  You never know with relievers, but so far, he just looks like another overrated Cubs relief prospect to me.
