Gameday has Rondon throwing consistently in the mid-90s.

Thanks, nice to read.

Barney cut his knee today and needed 5 stitches.  Out for opening day, possible DL.

Baez!!

There is really no reason to be concerned.  Since we know the Theocracy has not written offf the season, we can count on the Cubs to make a move to bring in a high quality replacement.

It would be interesting to see how they fill the roster spot if Barney has to go on the DL.  They'd have to clear a roster spot for Alberto Gonzalez and I don't think there is anyone worth losing over him.  The two most likely infield fill-ins (Vitters and Lake) spent the spring hurt.  The only other guys on the 40 man roster are Villanueva and Watkins...so I guess Watkins would probably be the choice.

You just can't get away from the faulty dilemma, can you?

Dave, for there to be a faulty dilemma would require me to see only two alternatives, or to at least portray a situation in which there are only two.  And I have not done that.  Now I have looked at the available evidence and drawn a reasonable conclusion as to what should be done, and what the Theocracy likely is doing and will likely continue to do.  But when you start with a team which would have to catch lightening in a bottle just to be in the running in early July, and the bottle you are working with appears to have gotten smaller.... and been carried inside a well grounded building, if you don't do something to at least carry the bottle back outside and to also get a bottle with a bigger opening, the season is being written off, whether the Theocracy or some fans openly admit it or not.

Writing off a season does not mean a team will turn away wins, will play to lose, or stay home in October if some absurd fluke puts in the playoffs when they really don't belong there.  It simply means not putting any meaningful resources or effort or home in trying to make it happen.

HYou have given only two alternatives.

1. They have written off the season, and will do nothing to improve their chances this year no matter how well the team does in the first half of the season.

2. They have NOT written off the season, and will do everything they can to improve their chances this year, no matter how they start, and no matter what injuries occur right now.

If it were not for fallacies, you would have no arguments at all.

Alberto Gonzalez has made the trip to Pittsburgh with the team, so it looks like he's the guy if Barney goes on the DL.  Seems like a waste to kick someone off the 40 man for him, though.

1. They have written don't feed the troll, and will do nothing to improve their chances this year no matter how well the team does in the first half of the season.

And (since I wouldn't attribute deliberate mis-statement to you) if it weren't for misunderstanding, you would have no understanding at all.

Baker to the 60 day DL.  Takahashi and Clevenger (and Lillibridge) have officially made the team.  They'll decide on Barney tomorrow.

Whatever happens with Barney and the DL, seems like Cubs will have to activate Gonzalez or someone off the bench who can play the left side of the IF.

Let's say, for sake of discussion, that Cubs think Barney can be back by next weekend and are willing to play a few games with a 4-man bench.  You can't have a limited 4-man bench--with 2 OFers and 2 catchers.  In those circumstances, they need Gonzalez way more than they need Clevenger.  So, whether Barney goes on the DL or Cubs play a few days with a 24-man roster, a utility IFer has to be added, I think.

Of course, adding Gonzalez would require a 40-man roster move.  What do you do?

I suppose Cubs could 60-day Garza, backdated to 3-22.  That would keep him out until 5-21, which is maybe a couple of weeks later than the best case scenario absent the 60-day.  Garza might not like that too much.

Or, you'd have to expose Raley (or Whitenack?) to a waiver claim.  Or, bring up Watkins instead of Gonzalez and avoid the 40-man problem.  Any other ideas?

Bat timing on the Barney thing.

Clevenger can play second base for three or four games.  Longer if necessary.
