Pitcher: Jake Arrieta

Defensive Runs Saved: 6

Arrieta's improvement from breakout starter in 2014 (including a 2.53 ERA) to one of the best pitchers in baseball in 2015 (1.77 ERA) was at least partly due to the Cubs' defense. As a team, the Cubs improved from the worst defense in the National League in 2014 (minus-33 DRS) to the fifth best in 2015 (28 DRS). Meanwhile, Arrieta himself improved defensively by nine runs, thanks mostly to improved range. He made 11 more plays than an average pitcher on the balls hit to him, the most in the NL.

I guess Hendricks is your 25th man.  Small surprise, but I doubt the 25th man gets used in any case.

Hendricks is there in case the gane goes 16 innings.  I hope Arrieta goes 9 anyway.  I don't know that I'll be able to handle Strop on the mound in a close game.  Hopefully we only use Arrieta and maybe Rondon.

Hard to think of a circumstance in which Hendricks would be used in the game.  I would have thought an extra pinch hitter would have been potentially more useful.

Dave, if you look at the 40-man roster, a 16th position player would be either Szczur or Herrera.  Neither likely to be very useful.

I agree that there is no one that is likely to be used.  But you might as well have someone there that MIGHT be used.  Either could be useful in a double switch, even for an inning or two.

Thanks very much for that link, brjones.  There was a point late in the season that either J.D. or Len said that Ross might be the real MVP for the team, which seemed like an absurd thing to say. I'm sure that he didn't mean it literally, but he was making a point about how exceptionally valuable Ross has been in spite of his on-the-field limitations. Beyond the point about Ross, the article does an excellent job of arguing for the importance of the intangible effects of "chemistry."

Something that I find interesting is the Astros and Cubs are often compared as long teams on the rise.

The Astros playoff starting lineup has 3 players in the age 25 or under age season.  The Cubs will have 3-4 that will be starting above their age 25 season.  (This is different from their actual age.  This is Rizzo's age 25 season.)

Anyone who doesn't believe in the "intangibles", or whatever you want to call what a guy like Ross brings to a team (especially a young team like this one), is a fool.
